What to eat (or drink) during a ride

What do you eat (or drink) during a ride and when?
How do you carry it?

Ditto if you are trying to lose weight.

If you are doing a ride that is under 2 hours, eat a bagal or something before you leave on the ride, take a bottle of the sports drink of your choice and a bottle of water with you, tuck an energy bar of your choice into your jersey pocket and you should be fine. Chance are you won't need the energy bar at all, but it's there just in case.

If you are doing a ride that is more than 2 hours, eat something about 500 calories before you leave, then consume 250-300 calories per hour while you are riding your bicycle starting with the first hour. This 250-300 calories can come from a combination of energy bars (or other foods of your choice) and your sports drink.

Since you burn about 500-600 calories per hour when you ride 250-300 calories per hour is half that so won't gain weight.

As for what to eat ... check your local pharmacies, and the pharmacy section of your local grocery store to see their selection of energy bars. Pick one of each one that looks appealing. Try them and see what you like.

You can also try things like cereal bars, granola bars, salted almonds, dried apricots, cookies, fig newtons, etc. Whatever you like, and whatever's convenient.

I carry my food in a Bento bag.
