Edge: Now or Later?

As i begin my first year of training in earnest, I realize I will not really train effectively till probably next year. Job, Kids, Family.....it will take me this season to really learn how to ride and train is my guess. I know I'll make progress by mid to late summer, but for now I just want to educate myself as much as possible on how to train. Read what I can, try various methods, etc.

I have a mavic wintech w/out HR, but can add the cadence sensor.

Was thinking I would get the Edge 305 with HR & Cad just to set myself up for the inevitable.

Should I wait one year to get an Edge when they upgrade it? Or should I bite the bullet, get it and suffer the inevitable planned obsolescence?

Oh...I should mention my goal is to get back into the MTN riding I love and compete in longer endurance races 50miles and up a few times a year.

I think it's going to be a while before they upgrade the device. Famous last words, but the reason I say that is the only thing it really needs is longer battery life and more memory. But, they need to do that while keeping the unit size and price at current levels. New features can be introduced with firmware software upgrades to the current device and the hardware limitations really only affect distance cyclists who are on the road for 10+ hours.

They need to be spending their time making better end user analysis software. It's pretty good now, but could be worlds better.
