Hookah

Is smoking hookah as bad as smoking cigarettes? What will it do to my lung capacity? Anyone have any personal stories?

Its the same damn thing.

For some reason people think it's better because you smoke it through a water pipe and it tastes like apples. In reality it's just as bad.

Same here. On occasion I like a good Macanudo (sp?) but as a lifestyle? No way.

Do you use charcoal on top of the tobacco to keep it going? If you do it is probably much worse than smoking cigarettes.

A lot of my family smokes tobacco through a hookah, except they call it Hubbly bubbly.

Lets not forget the sanitation concerns with communal use. Hookahs might be fashionable, but they're still pretty stupid.

Smoke is fine particulate matter in the air. If you're burning something and breathing it, you're getting that particulate matter into your lungs. Whether it's cigarettes or something else (loose tobacco without tar and additives, clove cigarettes, etc.), breathing smoke impedes lung function, and long-term exposure can create chronic problems.

Heh.

I went to a hookah bar one year with my friend. He smoked up, and I just watched him. I think I asked him why he would do it, and to him it just tasted good, so he would do it.

At least the Turkish food was pretty good.

Hookah is not as bad as cigarettes. Ofcourse its not good for you, but a good portion of the smoke is more like steam.

Well one of the worst possible things that you can do for yourself is smoke tobacco. It increases your chances of lung cancer by huge levels. It can give you emphysema. I increases chances of heart attack. But wait there is more... you increase chances of stroke. It is definitely not a good thing.

Ask Michael Phelps. He won a couple gold medals and is consider a great athlete.

Oh wait, that was not a Hookah - but it was a bubbly bubbly.

I used to smoke cigarettes. I guess it was just a bad habit I picked up when I was a kid. Truth be told I was in OK shape, but was still being impeded by low lung capacity. I've been quit for about two years and the difference is incredible.

Hookah is still burning stuff and breathing it. Which to me almost seems as common sense as cigarettes being a hindrance on performance.
