Without irony, I think it's too bad you've never interacted closely with a talented researcher. I've been fortunate to have had the experience and have seen the value of their expertise in solving real, practical problems even though they themselves have never worked outside an academic environment.

Pretty much. I train hard & would personally go to someone that has also trained hard. If I had a choice between Lance & Carmichael, I would choose Lance.

You are pretty dense if you think those 4 are bookworms who sit on their ass all day. I can't tell from your posts whether you are young cocky kid with no life experience, or an old codger stuck in his ways. Either way it's just sad that you are unwilling to open your mind and accept that someone may know more about something than you.

Its just how I am. I'm not cocky for saying I'd prefer to have Lance as a coach or Ullrich etc, as opposed to a bookworm that doesn't sacrifice that much in life.

In a world of stupid quotes, that ranks near the top. You really have no idea.

Well, I have a good idea how Mr Friel leads his life compared to someone like Lance Armstrong. Worlds apart. Jeez, we can all go to Uni.

You are cocky for thinking a coach can't teach you anything.

Anyway, like I said, either way it's just sad that you can't accept someone's knowledge and experience just because they personally may not have "won" or been the top of their field.

Charmichael may not have been as successful as a professional athlete as Lance, but he is clearly a very successful coach. Let's take Lance off the table, he's obviously not a coach so you don't get to pick him. Are you still saying that you don't respect the people I mentioned (to be fair Coggan is not a coach) because they have not personally won the tdf?

If Allen Lim offered you free personalized coaching, would you turn him down? No thanks man, I'm waiting for Lance?

No, I don't think that you do.

You are clearly just trolling at this point, I see no reason to continue this any further.

I will just add that you (or anyone else who may be interested in actually learning something) may want to google Tudor Bompa.

All I'm saying is, fairly, I would prefer to be coached by someone that has been involved in the sport at a high level than a bookworm who probably can't even ride a bike.

You can have whatever coaching preference you want, however misguided it may be, but characterizing Friel as a bookworm who can't even ride a bike is incorrect.

I like your way of thinking umd, having a coach who is a former protour rider, someone that has been heavily involved in the sport, not just educationally.

Someone that burned 8000 calories a day, not someone in the study hall burning 1500.

You should look at the ultra successful US basketball coach Isaiah Thomas. He played in the USA and then went on to a phenomenal coaching career. Just because you can walk the walk doesn't mean you can talk the talk.

Just because Lance, or any "tour rider" for that matter, is strong and accomplished doesnt mean they can teach you anything, even if youre riding alongside. The aforementioned coaches and authors on the other hand...

Similarly to other sports, golf for example...all of the guys winning major championships have coaches, but their coaches arent the ones winning.

Sounds like you have some serious issues with higher education and academia.

By the way, Carmichael was relatively successful in his day. Certainly faster than you are.

Touchy. It might have something to do with me having the opportunity of going to University & not grabbing it.

Does this sound right?
Absolutely. As long as your computer has an average speed function down to 10ths. Our strain gauges are no more precise than a spoke magnet & calculator.
While you're in the middle of your trial, both values (W & mph) are jumping all over the place (stochasticity, I've heard it called), but at the end of it, an FTS is still a helpful training tool when you have fixed resistance.

And you can take little steps yourself to solidify your data. I scoffed when I first read in the Coggan book about using CP20 minus 5% to calculate your FTP, but riding a one hour time trial with your trainer is indeed grueling. I had three vastly different values when I rode three hour-long trials. But my 20-minute trials are in a pretty tight shot-group. (Oh geez, here comes the HTFU crew...)
