periformis muscle?

Hello... any body have pain symptoms from a pinched nerve running thru the periformis muscle? A massage therapist seems to think thats what I have. I need to stretch etc... but with training for a century... wondering if there's more I can do.

Sarah-

Hi. I had an injury to my periformis muscle about a year ago. I am still suffering from the effects of this.

My periformis muscle tightened so much that I had severe back pain. This back pain was so bad that I was bedridden for 3 weeks. I couldn't do anything on my own, even necessary bodily functions. My parents had to come stay with me and carry me to and from the bathroom, and they also had to help me bathe. I was horrified and depressed. When I finally was able to get up, I was shuffling for another week, then I walked with a cane for another week. I am still having pain today. It's not good.

Stretch that muscle good- if I'd known how bad I could injure my periformis muscle, I would have stretched it more regularly. If you're feeling some soreness, perhaps you should see a sports physician also. It can get bad, and I think I suffered the worst case scenario.

I don't have any other advice beyond that because if I'd known what to do, I wouldn't have gone through that horrible health incident. My advice is to seek some medical advice quickly and see what they can recommend for your periformis muscle.

Good luck!

Thanks Koffee. So glad there is someone else out there that has had trouble with this. Well, not glad for the malady, but glad I'm not alone!
Anyhow: I have seen a massage therapist which helped immensely. I hurt like the devil during the massage, but the relief has lasted weeks. I do however need to stretch more and even still not sure if I am doing all I can. I think stretching AND massage therapy may just do the trick in the long run.
I've picked up my training lately for a century and so far, knock on wood, the muscle has not gotten any worse.

Whoops! Just realized I created a new thread instead of posting a reply to this one! Sorry about that, and here's the reprint in the correct location!

Totally understanding your meaning....

I use a massage therapist on a regular basis. I go every other week, and when the pain is unmanageable, I go every week. It sure does help. Afterwards, I like to jump in the whirlpool and stick my back right against the jetstream. Aaaaah... it's good stuff.

However, my error came from not listening to my body. The day my back went out completely, my back was feeling really funny- yet I still ran for 8 miles and taught an aerobics class. Later that morning, I went to work, and by the time I got to work, I was in immense pain. By the time I walked into my office, I was on my knees crawling to the phone, and by the time I reached the phone, I was laying on my back in tears. Even breathing hurt. Dang!

That's why I recommended a doctor, even if you're seeing a massage therapist. If you have insurance, you can get your doctor to write off the massage therapy as necessary, and your insurance will reimburse you for the massage sessions. At the very least, doctors can be good for that.

All right, sounds like you're at least aware of your problem and want to do something about it. Kudos to you for that one, and good luck with that muscle!
