Tapering before a big event

I am doing the 24 hours of Moab next weekend I am wondering if I should start tapering or keep training up to the day before the event? My training consists three to four hour mountain bike rides four days in row with one day off. I have never done a 24 hour event before I have done Moab skinny tire which consisted of four days of riding in a row about 70 miles a day with lots of climbing and the taper plan worked out pretty well. I know the adage about better to be over rested than over trained, However I would like to have all the fitness gains possible.

I would definitely taper. In my case that would mean, in the week before the event, maintaining the intensity of my training but cutting its duration, and then taking at least one and possibly two rest days immediately befor the start.

I like to take a day off two days before the event. The day before, do an easy short ride with a couple hard efforts thrown in.

This is more important for short races than for long ones.
