Hard or soft?

Hi,
it seems to me that a tire would last longer on a trainer if it was soft.
You get a larger contact area. So I let a bunch of air out of the tire.
Thought I'd ask around to see if anyone else had tried it.

Hmm. Interesting question. If the rubber COMPOUND were soft, you'd get fewer miles, as the rubber would wear off more quickly.
However, you're taking a standard-compound tire and making it bigger, thus spreading the wear across, eh?
Nope, I don't think it'll work. I think you'll probably just end up wearing out more of the tire just as fast (maybe a smidge slower) than if you had it pumped all the way up. But I could be wrong.
Try it out and let us know!

The tire would have a larger contact area, so there would be less pressure on the tire, not to mention that theres less air pressure in the tire anyways. This should reduce overall wear, but the wear pattern on the tire will be different. More wear on the sides of the tire and less in the center.
