But wait! Fresh water swimming is supposed to be safe from aquatic biting things.

Otter attack leaves Calif. man with 40-50 wounds

Oh wow! I swim Lake Mead often. In fact, going there tomorrow. Never really worry about safety there. But we don't really have much in the way of aquatic wildlife beyond the random flock of ducks or geese.

I've always felt salt water was far safer simply because in it, I have the option of floating. Fresh water I have to swim or tread water the entire time. (Every swim instructor I had until I was in my 30s insisted everyone can float, they just need to relax enough, arch their back and trust the process. When I was 12, I took a deep breath, held my nose and after a time, opened my eyes to see the pool fill 8' down going up.)
