So I am going to do it...the big triathlon
So many of you know, or at least all of you who know me and have been following me lately know that I wanted to do a triathlon. A lot of you made it into a joke that lasted probably 20 pages on my good upgrade or no thread. Anyways, this Saturday, August 6th, I am meeting the director at the training grounds and paying him for the race. This is my first Tri, but I know I can do it. I am getting running shoes that I am going to put on after the swim and bike and run with them. I am going to get these:

They got great reviews and I think they will be awesome for what I need them for. Anyways, I just wanted to give you guys a heads up if you were still in the clouds of me doing this. My father is going to come and watch me do it so that is good that someone will be there. I think someone else said he might come and watch and that would be cool too. I would want pictures of me riding the bike and swimming and running maybe too if anyone could come too with photos and then post them on the forum. Anyways, take care.

What distance will you be running? Are you doing the race on the 6th? Generally it's not a good idea to do a race in new shoes because you don't know how they'll fit. Since the run is at the end I suppose it won't be too bad if you get blisters or rubbing.

the race is on september 10th. i got a massage lined up for september 12th. i have a wedding to go to the same day of the race which i will be exhausted but no big deal, a shower followed by an epsom salt bath will fix that up nicely. i will be training all of august now in the new shoes so they should be just fine by race time. i will have them sitting next to my bike along with a pair of fresh socks from the dryer. it takes me literally 25 seconds to put on socks/shoes and thats no big deal since this is my first tri and im looking just to finish one, not to finish first. although that might be a goal down the road if i really enjoy it. it seems like the hills i have been cycle training on, i get the same exact time everytime no matter what. i have it in the lowest gear always but i always put full force and everytime its the same time. even after a few months, not a second off, its always 36 seconds flat on this one hill.

Have you practiced transitions yet? It's one thing to put on socks when you're completely dry, but totally different when you're soaking wet and your feet are covered in sand or dirt. I bring an extra hand towel to clean my feet before I put socks on.

that cbadrider is very good advice, thanks so much for that tip, i will be sure to do that. anyways, my main concern now is the time factor. it takes me about 2 hours to ride 30 miles. granted a bunch of that time is on hills, steep hills, but i would say my time in the bike race part will be an hour and a half probably. the race starts at 830am and ends at 12pm when they hand out awards. that leaves me about an hour or so for each swim and run. i know my run will be like an hour or so as well. how can i do this?

well i just did about 17 miles today in the rain. i did that in like an hours time or so. i think i do tons better when the weather isnt so hot. the days i was doing 20-30 miles were like 90-100 degree days outside. the rain made it a little tricky to deal with, but it felt a ton better. given the fact the tri is in september, it shouldnt be that hot and it shouldnt be that cold. i think i can definately do this now. i think the hot weather slowed me down, etc. i know im still young, turning 27 the end of september, but the weather plays a huge factor in how far i can go. i did put the pedal to the metal though today in the rain. it's not gonna be easy, but then again nothing worth fighting for is. i want to do this before i pass on.
