I was looking at the Sustrans website the other day and they seem to have a good network of routes over the whole country.

I was thinking of visiting England in the not too distant future. Is there a bound version of a map for the whole country that has the routes marked?

I saw books like this below, but I don't know if it has a complete roadmap with superimposed cycle paths (which is what I would really want)

Local councils usually publish their own cycling maps for their area so whichever town you're visiting do a search for that council's web site, there could be a downloadable PDF.

Thanks, I had seen a couple councils had their maps. Its not particularly useful to someone who is touring across the country and doesn't really know where they are going to go. It would seem to me that a bound country version would be quite useful (and could be republished on some regular basis to update changes)

https://www.opencyclemap.org/ is a good resource since it shows all levels of official routes and also footpaths through parks and woods, and location of toilets. A netbook computer would be easier to carry than a large printed book with this level of detail. A netbook would also be useful for finding B&Bs as they seem to rely on the internet now rather than hanging signs in the street.

The sustrans site is good for showing you specific routes but these routes are really just linked together roads which you could put together yourself. They aren't cycle specific usually. When I first started cycling I followed a couple of signposted routes and soon realised that the roads are a patchwork of little roads and if i didn't stick to the signposted route i could do a very similar route with other little roads which would be just as good. The best way to plan a route for me is to just look at google maps and see if you can string together roads from A to B without using the green or blue roads which are major roads that you either are not allowed onto or you wouldn't want to ride unless you have a death wish.

Not all of the sustrans routes are roads, roads are used where cycle paths aren't available.
If you have a rough idea of where you want to go you can string places together with the sustrans routes and check out local council web pages for more detailed info on them. If you're planning to cycle around a particular area Ordinance Survey maps are the way to go, these are maps designed for walkers etc and are very detailed and will show cycle routes, have contours so you can judge hills and even have pubs marked
