Yep. The American Century is over. It now lags behind many other countries in almost every indicator of quality of life. (life expectancy, literacy, health, leisure time, happiness....heck, even personal liberty!)

Bek, all I have to say about John Pucher is that he has a very euro-centric analysis. Why ignore what Asia can teach America?

Remind me why the japanese transport ministry is looking into roadway bike space with 98 pilot projects to cut down on ped/bike accidents again?

Because they've already got all the low hanging fruit and are now looking for that last few percent of non-auto transportation. You prefer to skip doing all the things that make the major gains, and go right to the things that will only give you a few percent gain.

a ludicrous mischaracterization on my take on 'best practice' inducements to american road bicycling.

like you said, look to what works in other countries. i also mentioned transit connectivity as part of the puzzle, not the sole solution. transit and transportation costs that reflected true costs of motoring wouldn't be the entirety of the plan from any transportation engineer looking to increase american road bicycling.
