Over or under dressed?

At just a little over a mile into my ride yesterday, I passed a kid running who I think is one of the distance runners at the local high school. He was wearing just his running shoes, and sweatpants. Nothing above the waist…no gloves, shirt, or hat. Temp was about 32°F, “feels like” temp was lower.

It’s different for runners.

I don't wear too much on when running, actually I call it a jog these days (am 67). O the bike, in the same temperatures I wear 3 long sleeve items, base layer & two thinner jerseys, unless really cold where I have a thicker outer layer. Never wear tights, 3/4 bibs.

Yeah I guess it's foolish to underdress in the cold, even when you're running. But maybe if you're not going far OR you can duck in somewhere if things go south, then it's not as dumb. I mean, right? I don't run, so I'm only guessing.

For years now I've been doing my winter training rides on a bike with panniers. I start out dressed in enough upper-body layers to be comfortable and then, when I'm warm, remove a layer and stick it in a pannier.

Days when the temps go from, say, low 40's F to upper 50's, I sometimes have to pull off two layers in a given ride, and maybe my neck gaiter or earband or both. No big deal.

Imagine making more heat than we do (there's no coasting in running) and also having less wind to carry it away. AND being young with perfect circulation.

For me, those days were only 30 years ago, but I could see running in shorts and a sweatshirt. I'd probably have some kind of gloves and hat or headband, though.
