Used a combo of Lake Winter road shoes, sealskinz, light wool socks and poly-pro cycling socks. Would mix/match according to temp/conditions. If you decide on Winter cycling shoes get them a size larger than normal to allow for thicker combos. Toes need wiggle room to maintain warmth. This was the first winter in 20+ years of cycle-commuting my feet were always warm. Down to 12 degrees several times at night w/no probs at all. Good winter cycling pants will help keep your feet warm, too.

I'm a believer in merino wool. Test have shown it to be more breathable than synthetic fibers. Super comfy also.
