MTB tires on Road

OK here's the scenario. I have two road bikes, one is a beater. Just got 20 in. of snow here and I want to keep riding. I live in a nice small town so the roads are not plowed as well but there's also not that much traffic. Now this is my first real winter and was just wondering if I could put MTB tires on my beater road bike? I really don't want to sit inside with a trainer or anything. Would the fatter tires change anything at all? Thanks in advance.

MTB tyres are 26" tyres and won't fit a 700c rim. You'll want to look for something like cyclocross tyres. You may not be able to fit all widths due to brake arch clearance issues and even if you do, the narrow clearance can result in clogging.

I'm sorry. I forgot to mention that the beater bike is an x-mart brand with 26" tires. I also have MTB tires already mounted on another set of rims.

I just took my bike around the block this morning (without the MTB tires) and almost bit it twice.
