This winter I plan on getting one front studded tire for my bike. I live on long island new york and plan to ride through trails/roads full of snow and ice. I am on a budget of $100 so I could get two 160's or 1 296. Also, for you folks with nokians, what rims do you have on yours? I wont be riding it too much so I think a cheap rim will do. Advice?

I use a Nokian 106 on the front for commuting/MTB. The 296 nokian would be sweet when everything is covered in ice.

I had very few times were it would have been nice to have a rear studded tire. Such as a steep climb or something off camber.

The rims use something cheap.I use Matrix 550.

i have a 2 Nokia 300's but I find that if its a light winter ill just put 1 on the back for more grip. you have to take into account what type of riding and the conditions. if its all ice all the thime then I would suggest 2 front and back if its just traction u need then 1 for back would be enough. The only time you neea a front studded tire is when you do a lot of turns and such!

I think you are giving bad advise about using just a studded back tire.I could be wrong.Everybody has their own style when riding on ice.
I have found that when the front tire goes out you follow very quickly.It is much easier to control the back wheel when it starts to slide out.

Yep, your right. There have been several threads on the front vs back issue. In general, those of us who regularly ride in these conditions prefer to have the studded tire on the front for control purposes.
