Obviously I don't wear a helmet so I have this question

I like to wear hooded coat/jacket in cold/windy weather, as it has more coverage than wearing hat and coat separately, and wraps me nicely inside the clothing (including the neck) with only my face exposed. But there is one con: the hood restricts my peripheral vision.

What do you all do with keeping your head warm or wind-proof? I guess it's more of a problem if you wear a helmet?

As said, hoods are not optimal for cycling as they block your vision and can act as a wind sock... I wear a toque and a facemask.

A baseball cap helps, means the hood moves with your head.

Thin windblocker skullcaps work really well though - under a helmet/cap or on their own.

cap and buff or two. A hood impairs hearing and I feel a bit claustrophobic if I can't hear what's going on with my surroundings or with my bike.

Poypro hat, headband or balcava under my helmet. Not baklava, that goes in my lunchbox.

I Don't wear anything with a hood, well, at least not in public.

I have a couple of different weight balaclavas, 180's earmuffs, neck gaiters and a buff that get used in various combinations, depending on the temps. The 180's are the most important item on the list. They go on at about 30 degrees, adding the buff/neck gaiter around zero, below that I break out the balaclava as well.

I have been playing with the idea of adding a couple of extra items to the list:
a Cold Avenger face mask and/or
a Jackson V90 face shield.

I am thinking that one or the other would help with fogging issues. I just am not sure which way I should throw my money.

I don't wear a helmet for most of the year but I do in frosty/icy conditions. In a typical year here in Ireland I wear a helmet 3-5 weeks out of the year. If I find it to be cold I wear a beanie hat and I also wear fleece fabric gloves instead of actual cycling gloves.

I wear just a winter hat down to about 0F, then I pull the hood up. I have a light wind block jacket that has a hood and it is always on me at some point in the layering system and the hood is a very close fitting almost cinched design that does not catch the wind or limit peripheral vision. Works well for me.

My windbreaker jacket has an elastic drawstring that keeps the hood down on top of my head, and a hard brim at the front (both very nice features). I wear a hat if its below freezing, and use the hood to keep wind off my face and head in the extreme cold. A well-designed hood won't limit peripheral vision, and should stay put even against a strong wind.
