OCA - U23 or "Elite"?

Hey all,

I'm new to road racing, though I have been riding for quite a while. I'm just in the process of getting my Ontario Cycling Association license. I am hoping to race several of the O-cup races (I know I've already missed the first two). I will be racing in the S4 division, and hoping to upgrade to S3 for next season.

My question is this:

I am 20 years old. I will be 21 in this middle of this season. On the OCA license site, I can either sign up as Elite (19+) or U23 (19-22). Does it matter which one I sign up for? I seem to fit in both of these categories, and I can sign up under "4 Men" with both options. Can I compete in the same races with either one? Can I gain upgrade points with either one?

Thanks for any advice!

You should email the OCA, they get back pretty promptly...

For upgrading I do not believe it matters...As far as I know the Elite and U-23 are all lumped together and fighting for the same upgrade points...

BTW, do not focus on upgrading...Just race...You realize you will be in a pack of 50+ guys that are all trying to achieve the same thing and only the top 5 get upgrade points...

Had an acquaintance with the same idea until he did his first race and saw what racing was all about...Once he realized it wasn't going to be a cake walk, he kind of disappeared...

Not trying to dissuade you, just pointing out the facts...

At 20 years old you will register as Elite 4 but it will say U23 adjacent to that on your license. There are no road events I'm aware of where the U23's race separately. If you look at results from recent races you will see U23 beside riders from each of the elite categories.

IIRC U23 would only be for UCI sanctioned events whereas whatever category OCA offers would be what you race locally.
