I'm going to be trawling airfare stuff like a hawk for the next few days... Planning out my trip and I saw a flight for NYC->Istanbul->Delhi then return Delhi->NYC for 1250. Was going to snap it but wanted to check on something with a friend that was there recently. I jumped back on the next day and prices were up by 400 bucks. Going to try again tues/weds next week to see what's up. If it's still as expensive, I might just forgo the detour and do a different country in SE asia instead.
I'm getting so psyched for this trip!

Yeah, I'm really confused about this, but I feel like the prices to asia are higher in the summer during vacation season since that's the highest travel season.
On a whim, I just priced the trip out with a departure next week and it's 1250 vs the 1550 in June. Wtf. I guess they're getting rid of any empty seats? This is so stupid, lol.

hmmm ... decisions ...
Wife and i are looking at homes and I'm kind of stuck between going with a turnkey home or save about 10% and getting something that would need some modernizing (new flooring and probably cabinet updating).

remodeling stress isn't worth it if you can avoid it. even getting a contractor on this side of the bay was a 6-month process. god help you if you need permitting for any of the changes you want. We were delayed weeks to get a permit for just moving plumbing around in an existing bathroom.

Plus, if you're borrowing for the house, it's not like that money you save is magically in your bank account to be used for the renovations. Our loan was just less and we have to wait until we've saved up to get new windows. And those kitchen changes we wanted to do? Long off.

yeah, we set aside money when we moved to do a ton of stuff. We're now in the house 2.5 years and just started the first real renovation.
Maybe other people are better at this sort of thing, but between moving, still working, changing all the little things you find when you move in, and general "life" stuff, it's taken us forever to even get started.

There are all those shows on HGTV where people buy houses with plans to renovate it and I've always wondered how the finances worked on that. Do you get a single mortgage for both? Just have enough cash to pay for one or the other?

We bought a fixer upper. Really its not a fixer upper but everything is dated and we want to change it. Its a lot of work even if you hire someone, and a lot of money on top the mortgage.
That being said, location is everything and the one good thing about buying in a nice neighborhood with older homes, is that people care. Many turnkey neighborhoods you have people that are interested in a nice home but aren't willing to be good neighbors.

15-20 Buffalo got loose today, swam across the upper Hudson, crossed I-87, and all got shot by farmers/hunters just south of Albany. Weird day up here.

Yeah, that was something we struggled with. We've thought about applying for a home equity line of credit to do it now (while money is still relatively cheap even if not quite as much as 2-3 year ago when we bought), but that would mean another set of bills to pay each month. I'd rather save up and do the next repairs with cash.

Wow, guess my info is off. Trying to follow along on twitter, mostly reporters, but thought the hunters were brought in by the cops. Maybe not.
