Please tell me what type of tool I need to order to work on my '91 Trek 950's bottom.

On my last couple 40+ mile rides I noticed a prenounced clunk getting louder and this evening turned around after 15 mins out as it was very apparent something was wrong. I finally traced it to the bottom bracket being loose, it has quite a bit of play. I have a fair amount of bike tools but not what's used to tighten this type.

Could someone post me a link and also tell me if there's anything I need to know when adjusting it? I assume I'll be pulling the crank arms as well, which will be no problem. Anyway - thanks!

A PARK BBT-22, BBT-32 or similar.
You'll also need a crank puller.

Looks like a Shimano sealed bottom bracket. It doesn't appear to be in very good condition. I'd bin it.

You need Park Tool part # BBT-2 or similar to remove and install the new BB. I don't think you will be able to tighten it.

Hey thanks for those quick replies, I'll order the park BB tool tonite. Oh and I already have a crank arm puller and know how to remove the arms.

So once I get that park tool, I take it the splined cups unscrew? Also does the non-drive side have left hand threads? And if the bearings and and spindle are shot, what might be a good replacement? Thanks!

Pretty sure a Trek would have standard English threads.
Drive side left-hand thread. (Clockwise to loosen)
Non-Drive side, regular right hand thread. (Counter-Clockwise to loosen)

I'd also suggest once you get the tool that you go to the hardware store and get a correct length bolt that fits in the end of the spindle with a washer to hold the tool in place while you break it loose. A '91 isn't likely to come out without a fight. I'd also start putting some penetrant on it now. Unless you know the spindle length and BB shell width I wouldn't order a new one until you have the old one out and can get the numbers off it or measure the existing. Because I've been there.

Great tutorial - thanks. I'm gonna remove the crank arms tonight, and will pick up a bolt tomorrow at a hardware store for the spindle so i can do the same set up you have. Bolting the tool on makes a lot of sense.

I've never worked on this type of BB, overhauled many of the older standard type with a lock ring and cups you that screw in, but have never done sealed cartridge types.

Btw I was thinking of bidding on this BB, what do you think?

It uses the less common 8X1MM thread, not the more common 8X1.25MM

So are you saying it's likely not to fit my bike?

I think Bill is referring to the treads on the bolt so it will screw into the axle to hold the tool .

No.
All I stated was the tread required to screw into the spindle.
Common crank bolt threading, which is NOT the more common 8X1.25mm threadingfound elsewhere.

Why would you want a used BB for $20.95 (15+5.95 shipping) when you can get the same NEW BB at amazon for $17.93 and free shipping?

The ebay one doesn't include the NDS cup. Your existing NDS cup may or may not be compatible, and may or may not come out in one piece.

Thanks for the info, that's good enough for me - I'm skipping the eBay BB. On a side note as I was removing the crank arms today and the crank puller pulled the threads right out of the left arm. Ruined it of course. I'm gonna cut it off with a hacksaw and replace it with something similar in the same length. Not sure how it happened. I've pulled many crank arms and never had that happen. What a PITA this project has been so far, lol.
