How do I get the @$$# right ball ring off a Sturmey-Archer AW Hub?
I've been hammering at it for an hour, and all I've done is break a screwdriver and use up half a bottle of penetrating lube. Any hints? The notches are beginning to deform which is why I've stepped back from it.
I've tried using a vice and a pipe wrench and neither can get a good grip. I need to disassemble the hub to replace the axle

Use a proper punch rather than a screwdriver. Heating the ring may also help. Sturmey-Archer used to make a tool for this, but it's been out of production for several decades. The modern version doesn't work with the older hubs, as it has a semi-circular notch rather than a square notch.

I use a punch I made from 3/8" brass rod. It deforms a bit to fit the notch better and doesn't deform the ring. Either you are turning it the wrong way or you are not applying enough force. Granted I have disassembled a few less than a hundred of these, but have never met one that didn't respond to the right hammer blow. How are you holding the hub while you are pounding?

I've tried it holding it vertically and horizontally, alternating notches, and alternating between medium tapping and heavy blows. It hasn't budged yet. I've tried a variety of punches and screwdrivers

But what are you using to hold it? Your hand, or a bench mounted vise?

Go to a muffler shop and ask them to go at it with the air hammer and a properly shaped dull chisel. Have them set the tool for light blows, and do any notch for 5-10 seconds, then switch to the next notch. If it doesn't come free after doing each notch twice, repeat with a higher setting.
I've never had one that didn't come off in a few passes at pretty light settings.

Or you can do what I just did to unscrew my SA dyno drum. I had to get out my tools and 1/8" scrap metal and made a hex hole in it. Fits to a few thou. The "nut" is 1 11/32" or 33.5 mm of soft alum. Stupid SA sizing at it's finest. 12" crescent just rounded off one side. Then tried a 36mm headset wrench with a tight fitting shim. Side 2 rounded off. WTF.
I now have a handful of resized wrenches, one was an antique farmer wrench.
