I'm replacing a old Suntour fixed gearset that is shark toothed badly.

I started this thread only because I was wondering what everyone's "take" was if I'm replacing the cranks if I should replace the BB while I have the cranks apart/removed. Got a lot of great advice, then it seems the thread took a left turn.

I'm also replacing the chain and freewheel, (though that has nothing to do with my original question)

So this is what I'm going to do. I'm going to order a new BB and stick it on the shelf, yeah that's right, if I need to replace it, then I have it. That's just the way I roll.

I will take photos and show my upgrade when it's upgraded, should be next weekend.
Now you know, asking a simple question rarely gets a simple answer on BF. You are now prepared for the over analyzed, often debated, off topic drift, but usually amusing replies for a seemingly simple question.

You might be right BUT, everything on a bike works together. You can almost never replace just one part.

I'm assuming you asked for advice because you felt that you lacked experience. You now have several more experienced bike guys who have suggested a new crank may well require a BB with a different spindle length. I, for one, think you would be wise to heed that advice. Since you're ordering a new BB anyway, make sure that it has the correct spindle length to match your new crankset. That's all that everybody is saying.

Yes, of course the bottom bracket will have to be replaced if it isn't the proper length. But we know nothing about the crank Scooty Puff wants to use nor anything about how long the current spindle is. I suggest he try using the one he currently has that is working properly and cross the bridge of a new spindle if he comes to it.

That would be the analog solution. OR he could measure the one that he has and research his new crankset to find what spindle length is recommended. That would be the more digital answer.

It's not often that cyccommute out retro grouches me.

You might want to check that again. Those two different cranks require much different spindle lengths. And if the Suntour is a Superbe you'll need a different taper as well.

Thanks for all the replies and advice ! Though I don't think everyone reads the whole post.

Anyhow, I'm going to put this "left lane" part of my thread to rest. I ordered all my parts, crankset, freewheel, and chain, from the bike shop I bought it from 15 years ago. They know me and my bike very well, and they know I do a lot of my own work. I buy tires, tubes, I have them tune the brakes and derailers, and buy most of my parts from them even though I could save a ton online.

They assured me all the parts they sold me will work, they know the length and taper of my BB, if they don't fit the will return them. I've dealt with these guys a long time, I trust them, so that part of this discussion is closed.

So today I went to install all my parts, and GUESS WHAT ? I removed the old crank arms and spun the BB and it feet like sand turning to gravel. MY BB IS BAD !

Can't find my BB tool, so off tomorrow to buy one, and get a new BB.

Oh, and I measured my BB using a metric ruler, it's a 68x123, and my LBS verified it. Of course I'm just going to remove it and take it with me back to the LBS. I'm riding tomorrow dammt.

Here's a pic stripped to the BB with the new freewheel installed on my rear wheel.
