Advice please ..
hi all, sorry to hijack this thread, but it seems relevant to my problem, i have a shimano rs81 c24 -"20 hole spoke" Hub that i salvaged complete with spokes,
at this moment in time i cannot justify spending £200 on a OEM shimano rim.
i was just hoping if anyone knew of a Rim i could use as a project.?
cheers. neil

my old Mk2 Brompton used a 20 spoke front wheel ..
20 spoke 700c rear wheel ? Not recommended , radial spoke windup when torque is applied is a bad idea
better , if speed is your quest , get a solid carbon disc time trial rear wheel..
more realistic I have a 40 spoke rear wheel 3 cross, still fine .. 30 years

20 holes is not uncommon for a front wheel; DT, Velocity, HED, among others, make suitable rims. That you want to use it for a rear wheel or a straight pull hub is immaterial, as, with very few exceptions, the rim doesn't care what number of spoke crossings you use (only the hub, which in the case of a straight pull hub, determines that for you).
I suspect that once you see what the typical rim available in such a drilling costs, the Shimano price will look more reasonable.

I'd do a Kinlin rim, XR22T, 26T, or 31T. Kinlin Road Rims
If you want to re-use spokes, XR22T will be the closest ERD.

They're also self locking (they are likely custom Sapim's) so you don't have to jack with spoke prep.

It doesn't matter.
You build it with a slightly stouter rim than you normally would for a front wheel (which is more or less ambivalent about what you use). A twenty spoke rear wheel is practically disposable, compared to a 36, 32, or even 28 spoke wheel. Your trade-off for lower weight is lower durability (for a traditional "low profile" rim, anyway). Consider a heavier rim, like the velocity Deep V, versus something super lightweight.
Unless you buy a rim purpose built for what you want to do (low spoke count rear), you are stuck using rims not intended for that use.

right i see, what about this then?
i purchase a chiniese rim 20h lets say a 50mm
i would have to have that custom drilled to the same spec as the shimano correct?
then use new spokes of the desires size,
that make sense?

You could also try the Enve nipples and tool. Basically, they flip the nipple over, BUT there is no screwdriver slot, so it won't cut into the rim. They may not center up in a spoke hole that is drilled for the nipple to sit in though.
They're also self locking (they are likely custom Sapim's) so you don't have to jack with spoke prep.
