You should be able to buy just a rim, tape it to the old rim and transfer all spokes to the new rim.

I find quite a few wheels on Craigslist, but it can take patience.

The wheel Barabaika found may match your bike reasonably well. Is that important? Rebuilding your existing wheel as Barabaika mentioned is also possible, but will take some time, and a bit of patience if you haven't done it before.

Another option is to just go to a local bike shop and see what they have in stock.

If the driver was at fault, then if the police locate the driver, that person, or their insurance company, should be liable for bike repairs.

craigslist or your local bicycle co-op will have one that will work... you'll want a rim of the same width as your original one.

search: "700c front" on CL, bicycles, parts and accessories... bet there's a proper replacement listed.

You want to get rolling again https://www.amazon.com/Wheel-Front-W.../dp/B000AO7DE2 will do it, at $32 probably the literal best bang for the buck. But you might take the opportunity for an upgrade from that level. These https://www.amazon.com/Vuelta-ZeroLi.../dp/B01M3Y45M9 are very nice for the price.

No, no, no.

You should not be worrying about scrimping after a hit and run, or even doing the work to fix the bike, especially if you were not at fault. If the driver was in the wrong then take your bike to a shop and get an estimate of the cost of repair with them doing the work and sourcing of appropriate replacement parts. Then submit to either your insurance company or the drivers. If for some reason there is not coverage then you can take still take the driver to small claims court. Make sure you have a copy of the police report.

It does depend a bit on the accident details and who was at fault. But, since the driver didn't stop, but was identified, then they'll probably take the blame.

Nonetheless, a court case could be a lot of hassle for a $50 part.

OP didn't say what his rim width was, but I use those two interchangeably unless you have a race bike that needs a narrower rim. The Vuelta is a nicer wheel though.

+1
This will match the rear wheel and for $40 is probably the smart choice.
We all want to talk you in to doing your own work, upgrading etc., but this wheel will be the SAME as the damaged one.

You'll probably also need a rim strip/tape.

IF the rim doesn't have "kinks", it "might" be salvageable.
I did an "unexpected" nose stand on my Globe. I kind of "stepped off" to the side and the rear of the bike hit the ground at about a 45* angle from about 3-4' high. The rim received a really bad "wow".
Loosening & retensioning the spokes and it was totally fine. Much better than new.

Agreed, but we don't know for sure that the wheel is the only damage. What if the fork is bent or there is other impact damage? A bike shop should evaluate the bike, as there is generally no charge for an estimate.

Also, I should have mentioned before that my bike was damaged by an at-fault bus driver (and I was injured as well). The company's insurance company paid the full cost of repairs to my bike without any need to go to court. Even though New York is a no-fault state and I carried auto insurance, because I was not driving the other person's insurance was responsible.

Plus, at this stage it isn't a "court case", it's a potential insurance claim. The 1st step after police contact should be to get a professional estimate of all damage & repairs. It depends on the OP's general circumstances whether or not a small claims action or eating the costs makes more sense.

True, but the 'hit and run' aspect and the OP choosing to contact the police makes me suspect that the motorist is at least primarily responsible. And my experience has been that insurance companies won't argue too much about the relatively minor cost of a front wheel (or even the whole bike if it turns out there is fork and/or frame damage) in exchange for a signed form absolving them of any other claims related to this crash. Of course the OP should first be completely sure there are no medical issues that may take a little while to show up before signing such a form.

There's no guarantee of an insurance payout, of a win in court, or even ever getting paid if you do win in court. It could takes months regardless. I'd want to get a wheel, patch up whatever else needs it, and get rolling again. OP could be back in the saddle by Monday, for 30 or 40 dollars outlay.

I would get the numbers from the shop to repair, but then do it myself, save the quote in hopes of being to report for h & r's indurance.

Glad the worst is just a wheel replacement.

I once had a collision with a car, the driver was at fault...witnessed by the cop that was just three cars back. I wasn't really hurt, but I too experience beyond-repair damage to my front wheel. The police report was filed. Unexpectedly, a few months later I received a check in the mail from the driver's insurance company for the cost of the wheel. Well...the check was for less than $100 but it was noted that is was compensation for the wheel. At the time of the accident...not thinking clearly...maybe from the truma of it...I didn't think too much about the wheel since it was one I had built myself reusing a rim, hub, spokes, and nips that I had laying around. But had I said in the police report that the wheel had cost me ## dollars...I probably would have received more. So...make sure you have that info in the police report. Call back and have them add it if you didn't.

I'm staying out of the insurance/court end of it, but I agree with an above statement that the bike should be checked out by a professional bike shop to make sure that the frame and fork haven't sustained any serious damage.
