Just bought some Ultegra stuff. . . now what?
I just recently bought a road bike and didn't like the components, especially the rear der. . . so I scoured eBay and got a great deal on Ultegra set: rear der, cassette (11-23), brifters, cables and whatnot. I believe I have a Shimano. . .don't laugh. . . 2200 set on the bike right now. I already know that i will need a new chain, but will I need a new crankset, bb and front der, bc i was hoping to upgrade a piece at a time, so i don't want to invest in that right now. I figured u wrench-heads would know better. Thanks, Farhan.

so shimano chain rings aren't interchangeable with their chains then, thought shimano stuff would be the same, just need a thinner chain to deal with the closer cogs in the cassette. o well.

The point is chain wear. The chain is worn out along with the chainrings, and they conform to each others shape. If you change the chain, then the new chain wears out faster to to conform to the already worn out chainring.
So unless the cogs are pretty new, I would'nt change the chain without changing the cogs and chainrings. btw, most chains and chainrings of similar sizes are interchangeable.

NoNafs: Can you tell us what markings are on the old crankset (is it 2200?) and what series of Ultegra stuff you bought (ie, 9-speed or 10-speed)?

The real question is: Will your new cassette fit onto your old freehub?
If it does, I'd just bolt on the new parts, ride the bike and see how it goes. If you're making an 8-speed to 9-speed conversion you might have to pop for a front derailleur if you have a triple crankset but I'm told it'll work fine with a double.

I have a double in the front, so a new front der might not be necessary. When I get the parts and put the stuff together I'll let you guys know how it worked out, but based on the responses so far, I seem to have all the neccessary parts.

Sup man, I recently upgraded my Fuji Finest from Sora to Ultegra.
I had to change out the cassette (which fit fine on teh hub), rear derrailleur, chain, front derrailleur, and shifters. I kept my old chainrings and they worked fine. As for the cable stops, you should already have them if you had Sora aka 2200.

Nope, 2200 comes with stem shifters. Guess I'll be needing a front der and some cable stops then. Will I also need a new bb cable guide, or is the one I have now sufficient?

I got all the stuff in the mail yesterday, that I originally ordered, i.e. shifters, rear der and cassette. I, being ridiculously impatient, changed out the shifters and the rear der to the new ultegra and left the front der and cassette, until I am able to go the LBS and have them change the cassette out. Its my first time doing a project like this, but it was pretty easy. Everything works great so far though!!

Ok, the chain is obviosuly too long, what is the correct number of links to use, i.e. how low do I want to keep the rear der, is it a matter of preference, or is there a standard height?
