Cassette lock ring
Does the cassette lock ring normally come with a new cassette, or with a new rear wheel/hub, or are they purchased separately?

Years ago, Campagnolo provided lock rings only with 11t cassettes because these were different than the standard ones. They felt that since all hubs came with a cassette, there was no reason to duplicate that with each replacement.
This was a major source of ill will, especially with customers using Mavic wheels, which didn't include cassette for their Campy drive trains. Campy's attitude was that the lockring was Mavic's responsibility. Eventually Campy cracked, and now includes lockrings.
I don't know if it's changed since, but Sram used to include lockring with better cassettes but not the mid and lower level models.
So there's a good chance you'll get a lock ring one way or another, but there's also the chance on none or two depending on what you buy.

Shimano has always provided lockrings with all of their cassettes. Campy does too these days, even with their lower tier Veloce models and even for those with 12T and 13T smallest cogs. No idea about SRAM since I've never used their cassettes.

Thanks, that was my concern. I'm replacing a Shimano 12-27 cassette with a SRAM 12-32, and looking at the cassette in its box there was definitely no lockring on top of the small cog. I just took it out of the box and found it clipped onto the bottom of the stack. So all's well.
Sorry for getting ahead of myself, but my new wheels are arriving tomorrow and I was hoping to not have a setback in putting things together!
