Cassette part question

Am I missing something or is Shimano no longer including the spring washer that goes underneath the cassette lock nut?
I was just cleaning the cassette on my wife's bike and noticed it was not there. We just came back from a cross country tour and I replaced the cassette on her touring bike in North Dakota. And no washer. Her cassette would loosen up in time and we had to stop at LBS along the way to tighten it.
So....?

Good question for which I hope there is an answer. On a recent cassette swap I just re-used the old washer.

Shimano has not had a thin washer under the cassette lock nut flange on many cassette models for years. We've not seen any tendency to loosen solely due to the lack of this washer. But there are other reasons that lock rings come loose, these we see often. Improper tightening, lack of proper spacers behind the cassette being the most common. Andy.

the toothy faces of the last cog and the inside face of the lock ring seem to work fine ..

Be sure you have the correct spacers if any, behind the cassette. It is important that the first (smallest) cog overhang the front of the freehub so that the lockring is tightening against the cogs and not the freehub. How many cogs are on the cassette and which brand of hub is it?

Generally cassette lockrings need to be tightened to 30 - 40 nm. Loose cogs may cause damage to the freehub, especially if the freehub is aluminum. Loose cogs also rattle.
