Mercier 300

My trusty bike of 15 years was recently stolen and I'm considering a replacement. I'm looking at a completely overhauled Mercier 300 (Reynolds 531 frame) for $400, the logo paint looks like it has rubbed off. Picture below. Does this seem like reasonable price? I realize I could start a project and build up a bike for cheaper but I'm ready to get back on the road!

Thanks for the help.

Not to be insulting seeing you have been riding for 15 years. First and foremost is does it fit you? That is a small frame. I don't know if it is the photo angle or what, but the front end does not look right. Even with it not having any issues, I would not pay over $250. However your location is going to impact pricing.

Not if you start with a frame/fork set, unless you already have all the components needed to complete the task. My opinion, of course, but an opinion based on lots of experience.

That bicycle, the Mercier 300, is a nice bicycle and will offer great ride quality, however...

There are Issues With French Bicycles and one would be wise to ensure that he, or she, is aware of them before getting into a French bicycle.

If it were me, I would pay up to $200.00 US but only because I happen to like French bicycles, especially good quality vintage ones.

Frame and crank look to be the only original parts. Mercier's are on a par with Gitane TdF and the Peugeot PX-10, although I think the workmanship on the PX is probably nicer than the Mercier. Depends on the day of the week the bike was built.

Somewhere on this site, I posted up photos of my 300, which I've had since new.

If you're just looking for an everyday rider, I think some of the prices you've seen are about on par

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to drive to San Jose from Davis to check the bike out today. I wanted to get a sense if it was worth the drive, before I took the time. Believe it or not, this is my size, haha.

The other bike I am considering was a Fuji Royale for $150 that is in pretty good condition. It seems like the Mercier is a much higher quality frame, plus I actually like the VO handlebars that were put on the Mercier. I will give it a test ride today and see how it goes. Maybe he'll come down on the price, or maybe not, the bike has some work in it and it is the bay area after all.

Thanks.
