Shimano 600ex?
Was this a good group back in the day? High or low end? Where did this stand with the rest of Shimano's groups in that time?

2nd from the top- under Dura Ace.
It became Ultegra.
The old old 600... (pre Arabesque) That stuff was as low end as anything else- I don't see that as being on any sort of product ladder.
Whatever level it was, (or even Dura Ace for that matter), it was "garbage" compared to Suntour.

Since it's Arabesque you're talking, we just recently hashed through all this on another thread.

For whatever it's worth- I didn't know they made 600 level canti brakes- These must've come out JUST before the BR-MC70 Deore XT cantis.
I've always thought the FC-6206 crankset was really cool- very understated, very "business." Even though "touring" was still big business in 83 or so, it seems that Shimano did pull the touring stuff out of the road groups and into the Z Series/Deore/Deore XT groups.

Compared to Suntour...
I think the only reason people like Arabesque is that it's nifty looking.
(I should be less harsh on Shimano for this stuff. I swear my 736 was haunted- nothing worked right on it- every ride *something* would go wrong- and as soon as I replaced the Arabesque stuff off there, it magically became a nice bike.)

The Early 600ex was also known as arabesque. was mediocre, The stuff from suntour was better,
but late 600ex also known as N600 was some pretty good stuff. heres a couple N600 components
This was Pre SIS

I like the 6207 crank, but not the 6207 rear derailleur or the side pull brakes. I had these on two bikes, which were built up new in 1984.

To this day I use the EX crank on my daily commuter. I like it because of the low Q factor, similar to NR Campy. the crank flexes like crazy, always did, but looks real nice. The rear derailleur had a weak main spring, and the chain would bounce too much. Crane models, the predecessor to Durace, had the same problem. Ditched the rear for Suntour Cyclone, which made a huge difference. 600 EX looked great, but under performed all the way around. Suntour was really light years ahead of Shimano at that time. I still think Superbe and Cyclone are the best stuff to ever come from Japanese component makers.

6207 is excellent friction shifting stuff, can even shift a 10 speed cassette on modern wheels.
Add 6208 shift levers and RD and you have a very nice 6 double indexing groupset.
Replace the guts of the right shifter with ones from a 7800 bar end shifter and it will index shift a modern 10 speed wheelset.
Nice looking pieces that can be polished, very little plastic. I like it!
