Ok, it looks like there is some continuing interest.

I'll try to coordinate for 2016. Here are the tentative rules. Always open to suggestions and clarifications. Classes may get adjusted some depending on final entries.

• Target: $0 build (not strict, but...)
• You can achieve this by either free acquisitions, or riding, with subtracting $1 per mile ridden for over 20F, or $2 per mile ridden for under 20F (or in significant snow/ice conditions at any temperature).
• Parts acquisitions can be any time, but the primary build and all mileage has to occur between November 16, 2015 and February 29, 2016, with all entries and miles due on February 29.
• Only mileage after approximately 90% of project completion is allowed.
  .
• Classes:
  - Best Road
  - Best drop bar or butterfly bar Cross/Gavel/650B/Randonneur
  - Best MTB/Hybrid
  - Best pre-50's styling (single speed, 3 speed, balloon tire, etc). Newer components are allowed if keeping the classic flavor.
  - Best Electric
  - Best Cargo Build
  - Best Tandem
  - Best small wheel bike (folding, recumbent, mini velo, etc).
  - Anything Goes. Unique, off the wall builds.
  .
• Unique Frankenbuilds are encouraged.
  .
• No judges. The final results will be a poll (or several polls) with "people's choice".

One of the questions has to deal with parts from personal stockpiles, as well as stripping donor bikes.

What I would suggest is that parts stocks be attributed an approximate cost/value. Stripping donor bikes and subtracting selling prices is allowed provided the unused parts are actually sold, and no values associated may be less than zero. Otherwise estimate the real cost/value of the parts.

Restorations are allowed provided significant work is done on the bike.

Individuals are allowed to make multiple entries, but one entry per "CLASS", and each entry has its own associated mileage.

I'm not sure about the strict price cut-off. It gives a good target, but I found it a bit impractical for a few things last year. It does, give one a good goal. However, I would rather not sacrifice the "build" for price.

Yes! I really enjoyed that thread, and the builds were creative. Especially liked the part about having to actually ride the bike a certain number of miles.

HaHa! Compared to the deals that are unearthed by certain C&V enthusiasts in Elwood IN, the thumb of Michigan, and even Boston, I feel I'm paying full retail in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area. Not to mention that buyers from Bowling Green, Ohio to Boyne Ciy, Michigan are picking deals in mymarket. Someone just scored a early 1980's Trek 720 frameset for $65.00.

I am interested. What are the rules?

Full disclosure - I just picked up a big box Schwinn abandoned by a thief. I live near a park which is the second most popular place to drop a stolen bike (other than the university grounds). The local police took the information but seem to have no time to deal with it. It was completely wrapped in duct tape to hide the brand I assume.

My intention is to make it sound and donate the bike to a shelter when it is finished.

I'm not too big into firm price cutoffs. I do have a plan for this bike, but anticipate the total build to come in close to $200 if I skimp on tires.

I could do a simple repaint and keep it under $100, but what fun is that?

Just hoping the rust doesn't chew all the way through the frame tubes.

Have the rules penalize, not disqualify, those over budget. I will be doing a cheap build this year but I won't compromise to have a piece of crap that comes in under budget.

Just thinking out loud........ a Shimano 600 tricolor group including wheelset, dt shifters for zero from a too small Cannondale R800. Couple with a zero basis Teledyne Titan titanium frame or a Cannondale Black Lightning acquired in a trade from Henry III? So out of pocket would be bar tape, cables, housing.

I'm certainly open to suggestions. Especially for the strip and flip people.

If you traded for parts. Then how much did the parts cost that you traded out?

Nonetheless, the goal is to have FUN!!!

So, do your accounting however you wish, as long as there is some logic to it.

I'm in. I've been looking for an excuse for a cheapo build with serious hill climbing gearing that I can leave at my mom's house for when I visit her.

I don't think anybody "argued" the value of the parts last year, but one could certainly do that some.

Last year we had the velo cheapo lipstick thread, where people posted a few teasers, but the final builds didn't come until the last day, and then everyone pretty much accepted each contestant's cost and mileage estimates.

Most of the lipstick teasers were just teasers, but that would be the place to discuss your novel method for accounting.

I made a spreadsheet and estimated the cost of everything. If I bought 100 nipples, and used 36, I charged myself (36/100) of the total cost of nipples including shipping. The final tally was pretty humbling (other than the fact that I've been riding a complete Titanium Litespeed that cost less than most people pay for bare frames).

Hmm, I trash picked a low-end Motobecane today with a seriously dented downtube. Too bad it's on the small side as I don't think I could put many miles on it no matter the final build.

I ended up with a lot of categories, but open to suggestions of splitting or consolidating categories. New cagegories? We can add new categories all the way up to the end of the contest.

Well, I've been planning a low cost 650c build for my niece. If that happens... it probably won't get a lot of miles from me either, just enough to make sure it is road worthy.

The goal is to enjoy and share, not to get bogged down by rules.

I just picked up a free mixte frame I'm planning on building for my wife: target date Dec 25.

My parts bin is so deep with appropriate parts that I can do a $0 build, depending on which color I decide to go with (she won't make any suggestions). Unfortunately it'll also be a zero miles bike, since she is a 50cm type of rider and I'm a 62cm type of rider.
