Full disclosure - I just picked up a big box Schwinn abandoned by a thief. I live near a park which is the second most popular place to drop a stolen bike (other than the university grounds). The local police took the information but seem to have no time to deal with it. It was completely wrapped in duct tape to hide the brand I assume.

My intention is to make it sound and donate the bike to a shelter when it is finished.
