Here's my 93 Marin Team Issue rescued from the dump. Nearly all the kit on it was on it when I found it, except for the stem, levers/shifters, tyres, post and saddle. It has Cook Bros cranks, XTR gears/cassette, Mag21s, Hope disc brakes and hubs, and Mavic 117 ceramic coated rims, Club Roost bars.

It had Machine Tech levers on it and SRAM SRT800 gripshift, but I sold the levers to buy a pair of Shimano M900 shifter levers and new disk pads. The tyres are Marin Lite off my old Eldridge Grade. The stem was an awful I-beam.

Someone has added terrible cable guides (two of which appear to face the wrong direction!). I'm going to ride it a while and if I like it as much as I think I will I'll cut off the extra guides and get it powdercoated as the nickel plating is not in the best condition. I'm a bit nervous about trying to cut/grind the rear brake bosses off in case I damage the stays.

The brakes are very early disc brakes by Hope, and not as good as modern ones, but they stop fine and the rear drop out area has been modified to take them.

It's perhaps not the most stylish, or tasteful with the mix of blue, purple and red, but I like it, except possibly for the red bar & pedals. It's very light and early impressions are good, and best of all it's not cost me a penny.

Good score, especially the cranks

That Team Issue is some nice kit.

It's only my opinion, but it's nice enough that I'd avoid grinding anything off. I'd also keep the finish as it was a pretty distinctive option, unless it totally won't protect the bike.

I just won an ebay auction for this Muddy Fox Sorcerer Pro. I've heard of muddy fox before but I don't know much about them. What can you guys/gals tell me about them.

Thanks, and I take your point about not grinding the brake bosses off as they are pretty solid items and there is a risk of damaging the stays. The non-original cable guides are very unattractive and will be easy to get rid of. The pics don't show close-ups of the BB area and some of the places the plating has worn off to bare steel. I've polished the bare steel up a bit and covered it with clear enamel but I'm not sure that it will provide enough protection for when I ride it off-road in the muddy conditions we often get here.

I have a set of Pace carbon suspension forks that I want to put on the bike for the summer, and at that point I'll make a decision about powdercoating it. If I do coat it it will at least be in a nickel colour powder. I want this to be a keeper as it's perfect for my size and my style of non-extreme XC riding.

British, so the folks at Retrobike might know a lot more. Your typical story of a nice shed brand turned big, that made nice bikes at one point and then got turned into a BSO-brand. A well...

Yours appears to be nice, though, and in that perfect 90's splatter it's hard not to love. I grew up in this era and the kids with the splatter paint bikes were the lucky ones!

Nice bike. I've had a couple of Muddy Fox Courier bikes in the past. They were good British bikes bitd, especially in the late 80s and early 90s, but these days they are just cheap dept. store bikes under new ownership. Such a shame.

Do a bit of a search on the Retrobike site and you'll see there's a lot of love for the old bikes in the UK.

Here is a catalogue from around that time.

found a nearly-real size photo poster of the 'original' Stumpjumper circa 1981, at a bike shop in midtown nyc today.
quite inspiring, i must say.
(i also remember that earlier version of Tom Ritchey MTBs were also equipped w TA cranks, right?)

So I'm wondering if anyone else has run across this issue , I'm cleaning up a 1993 / 1994 Kona Explosif to us as my winter rider. I wanted to replace the stem with something taller and shorter (it's a little agressive / short for my current liking) and of course I come to find the stem is a 1 1/8 threaded set up !

So is the thing to do just use an adaptor and go to a modern stem / bar set up ? I suppose I could shim a stem too but that seems a tad iffy.

Thoughts ?

I found this one on Craigslist for super cheap this morning. Everything is original, mostly in great shape and ready to be polished up. Except the great tragedy: the seller told me the wheels were really wobbly so he threw them away! grrr..... sad

Ardbeg 10 year. If I lose it on this 38 lb beast and slam into the ice, I don't want to skimp on the medicinals.

1996 GT Saddleback

Howdy All!

Here's my 1996 (4130) GT Saddleback. Got it new when I was in high school, and rode it until 2001, then it hung in my dad's garage until 2011. I converted it to single speed (38x16), swicthed/added/removed a few things. Currently the bike looks a little different with fenders and a threaded to threadless adapter. Will switch over to a Surly 1x1 fork this summer.

Nothing special, but a very comfortable, dependable, good looking vintage(ish) bike.

1998ish Gary Fisher Ziggurat. Arguably the zenith of the 26" Hardtails. Super smooth either way.
