1985 Mongoose ATB. Back from when Mongoose was a quality BMX company. This model represented their first foray into mountain bikes, as far as I know. This bike was a recent craigslist find. I don't think it was tuned up once in its 26 years, so the cleaning/overhaul was time consuming. The shifters/derailleurs were kind of a mess, so I went for a single speed conversion for the time being. It did take a lot of weight off the bike, and it also seemed to be fitting considering its BMX heritage. The parts are mostly original. Just added new tires and grips, and a single speed freewheel, of course. Some of the BMX touches apparent here: Chrome finish, BMX style pedals, and drilled rims. The original grips were pretty shredded, so in keeping with the theme, I installed some BMX grips.

Those are known as "Pro Class" rims among the Mongoose crowd, and are highly desired! Nice score! Back in their day there were different colored rim strips to suit your mood, like many of the anodized parts, grips, and saddles.,,,,BD

Great info. Thanks for that. Funny, I was thinking of matching the blue decals by getting blue grips and a blue seat. Had I known, it would have been cool to get blue rim strips to complete the look. Oh well, another time perhaps.

Here is a project not quite yet complete. 1988 Bianchi Grizzly. I'm not sure it still counts as a MTB w/the drop bars. Other than this, the saddle/post/pedals are new, everything else is stock:

I bought this lovely Schwinn High Sierra at a garage sale a few weeks ago. Mechanically perfect with very little wear. $25 for a very solid tank of a bike:

Thanks. I like getting the mail on this bike. The rollercams are quaint, but I've had them for years on my Ritchey Ascent, and I dont really like em except for novelty value.

Does this count?

1996 Atlanta Olympics folding MTB. Made by Montague. I keep it at work to ride during lunch breaks.

I picked up this 1985 Trek 830 this week and I plan to turn it into a touring bike with a dropbar conversion. I need to throw some tires that aren't about to blow up on it to ride it a bit before I start messing around with it. These lugged mountain bikes don't turn up that often around here.

Its actually really fun to ride. Bit of a beast, but no too much. And that 1st generation 6speed SIS still works like a charm. I'm really impressed with the sheer durability and stoutness of these mid 80's bikes.

I found a mid 80's Grizzly with splash paint that I can pick up from my boss cheap, although a little small for me it does have full XT which is what I really want. I may set it up like yours with different parts rather then trying to sell the frame as is.

I beat the crap out of my 86 shogun prairie breaker pro on trails almost every day from march through november, and even some snow rides in the winter, and I used it as a commuter 10 miles each way, again, almost year round, and then I put thin tires on it and used it as a road bike until I bought an actual road bike in 2003... and it still rides like a champ.

I posted pics earlier in this thread.

That mid 80s stuff was built to take a beating. And they had not too many moving parts, like later suspension bikes do. The only original part I'd replace with something different, if I had a mind to, is the U-brake (i.e. the mud catcher).

Just picked this one up. 1994 Bridgestone MB-1. All original except for the saddle and grips. I plan on putting some new Nitto Bullmoose bars on it and a B-17 saddle.

Johnny Alien, Beautiful bike!

I say keep it exactly as it is! That would have been a dream ride for me back in '94--Bullmoose bars would somehow just seem wrong

Sure it counts. A mountain bike is vintage in about half the time for a road bike, I reckon and a folder at that! Can you post a picture of it folded?

A 1980-something Huffy Mt. Storm.

Right now it's awaiting another crank and a replacement saddle.
Huffy ! Solid & reliable, never kick something that does what it's supposed to do and won't leave you stranded & walking.
