Italian road bike question. Need some information please

I posted a wanted add in craigslist for vintage road bikes and this guy got back to me about having an italian racing bike. I can't find anything about this bike. It said it was called a Prego or Perego. I didn't get the spelling and he's hard to get in touch with. I thought I would ask here. He's selling it for 125.00 and don't know if this is a good deal or not.

Thanks for any information.

I really know nothing about the bike and have no pictures. I'm really just trying to figure out what the brand is. Sorry!

How about you call him back and ask him to spell the name for you?

He/she is not asking for much either. Just if anyone recognizes the brand. Cut some slack here.

I've never heard of it, but that doesn't mean a thing... Pegoretti and Erregi yes... Prego or Perego no...

Maybe you'll be lucky and it's a Poghiaghi. If you're unlucky, it's actually a Peg Perego baby stroller.

Sorry for the lack of information. I'll give the guy a call. The reason I hesitate is because it took him about ten minutes to get from his shop to the phone last time. I'll see what I can get out of him....hopefully some images.

Thanks you all for the replies.

Wow, just got off the phone with this guy and it's a Peugeot! The guy is VERY country and sounds like he has piles of bikes in his shop. I got everything from prego to pegget. He finally spelled it out. He obviously doesn't know what he has. I'm just going to go to his shop and see. Thanks for the help and sorry for the trouble.

No trouble. It's just that it's difficult to give info when there's little to go on.

No trouble. People are just a bit avid here. That Peugeot could be anything. Look for chrome fork ends and rear stays. Check for a Reynolds tubing sticker either on the seat tube or down tube. IMO at $125, it is going to have to be Reynolds to be worth the price. But if he is country, he will probably dicker. Let us know what happens.

Yes, by "very country" I mean "hillbilly". I live in Tennessee and run into that a lot, no big deal though. I like hillbillies. I'll check out the frame. Hopefully I'll run into some good stuff. I'm looking for these bikes so I can convert them into single speeds. I'm VERY new to road bikes and have been obsessing over them a bit.

Again, thank you for all of the help.

Sorry, I did not mean to be seen as rude with my earlier post. It is just that Prego is a pasta sauce, as far as I know. It is hard to know what kind of deal something is without knowing a bit more.

I would definitely check to see what is in this guy's shop. He might have some gems in the pile without knowing it. Take a camera and take pictures if you are not sure what things are.

I didn't take it as a rude comment. I appreciate the response as I was lacking information. No big deal.

I thought it was pretty funny myself. I also knew of it as a pasta sauce. I'm excited to get out there and see what he has. My buddy who's a bike mechanic is coming with me so he'll be a big help. I'm still not sure what makes a really nice frame.

Another question that you guys may be able to help with. I'm considering starting a side business of converting vintage bikes into single speeds and selling them...possibly on ebay. I've been told lately that the market for single speeds is on the rise. I'm an artist and was going to do a lot of custom work. I don't know if this is a realistic idea but have found others doing the same thing and thought it would be fun. Any opinions? Do you think most people would rather do it themselves? Just an idea.

Thanks everyone. This forum is amazing. I've never had such fast responses.

If you have a decent bike to start with, you can covert old bikes to single speed pretty quickly. Unscrew the freewheel, toss on a bmx freewheel, re-dish the rear wheel, remove the extra chainrings, and shorten the chain. I have seen people put ads on CL offering to do this for folks.

One of my good buddies is an awesome bike mechanic. He works at harpeth bicycles which was rated one of the best bike shops in the country. He's on board for the idea and is willing to teach me how to do it. We've already done two and they turned out looking amazing. I really love single speeds. I think we'll just go for it and see what happens. The single speed and track bike craze hasn't really hit Nashville. There is a very large bike seen here though.

We'll see what happens!

There are lots of Peugeots - only a few will be worth $125. It would have to be a Peugeot PX10 from the 70's to be worth anything. Anthing else - unless it's new old stock or new in box or new in the barn won't be worth $125.

And Peugeot is French. French BB and French parts/threading are much harder to work with and find parts for than English or Italian.

We went to his shop and ended up getting a pretty nice vintage Schwinn for 10.00. The model escapes me. The Peugeot was nothing special. Thanks for the information on the Peugeot.

Prego is also an Italian eatery on Union St in San Francisco, nice if you do not need to care about the price.

Prego in Ponsonby Rd, Auckland NZ is a great place to eat. Especially if you work in advertising.
