1980's Atala Special

Hello, I'm new to this forum, and I just spotted a nice vintage road bike on craislist that I want to use for relaxed rides with friends and commuting to school. I am looking for a vintage european bike, but also nothing too serious.

I found this Atala "special" road bike that has...
"Ofmega 170mm cranks 52/42t, Campagnolo derailleurs and shifters, Shimano Exage/Modolo Corsa brakes set with aero levers, 3ttt handlebars and 110mm. stem, 700c aluminum rim with Miche hub on front, and Mavic rim with Shimano 105 hub rear, Brev seatpost, Vetta leather saddle, Shimano 600 pedals, and Vittoria Zaffiro tires."

https://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/bik/1648810365.html

and i was just wondering how much the bike is worth (if its worth $500) and if any of the components are sub-par in terms of quality.

Thanks,
-scmalex

$500 does seem a bit too high to me. That's more like a $300 bike, or maybe even lower. The ofmega parts are essentially a campy NR/SR clone, and the RD looks like a 990. I'm not saying it's a bad bike, just that it's not a $500 bike, not in that condition. The parts aren't bad either, but it's old entry/mid level stuff that should be less expensive. Seems like the seller wants to go with the "italian retro bike hype" and overprice it, imho. I'm no Atala expert, but if those were the stock parts(which is not very probable, but anyways) chances are the frame tubing aren't very high end either.

I always thought of Atala as a second tier Italian bike, in terms of them having much more basic detailing and finishes when compared to Italian "peacocks" like Cioccs, Guerciottis, Cinellis, Masis...etc...although Atala does have as long and grand a competition history as these other much heralded Italian brands.
considering this, I think $500 is a bit high, unless it has special components on it like a lightly used Campy SR or mintish NR gruppo. A mint condition Atala with middle range (Modolo, Galli, Gipiemme) but mint components might be more like in the $400ish range, but a well used serviceable/restorable one with the same mid range components, good paint, no corrosion, no dents should be more in the $300 range.
Either way, I don't think Atalas will command as high prices as something like a Masi would.

I have sold lots of vintage road bicycles and letting my early seventies Atala Professional go was a mistake. That said, the bicycle that you are interested in is mid level at best. So too are most of the components. The bike will offer a very nice, but not exceptional ride. For the asking price, I would want more for my money. I would pay no more than a hundred dollars for the bicycle but that is just me.

Perhaps you would like to learn a bit more about finding and Street Restoring a vintage road bicycle. I built MY "TEN SPEEDS", a website, designed to offer guidance to people who are new to the vintage bicycle interest. Have a look if you wish.

Here is the Atala I foolishly let go... Early Seventies Atala Record 101 Professional
