84 Fuji Touring Series Headset & BB...

I'm revitalizing a neglected Fuji Touring Series III (catalogue image here) I snagged off of Craigslist for $40. It has been a slow project with many bumps along the road, but I most recently had it sandblasted and powdercoated a new color, and am now itching to begin the rebuild into my new commuting and touring rig. But I need C&V's help selecting the appropriate components - namely a new headset and BB.

I could keep the stock headset as the races are still sound with no pitting, but the bottom fork race has some exterior rust-related pitting from previous years of neglect. Fork race's inside diameter is 27mm. According to Sheldon (see "headset sizing"), any 26.4mm headset should fit my fork and steerer, even if mine has the JIS threading...right? If so, does anyone have any experience with the Tange NJS headsets? I'm kind of indifferent about the sealed vs unsealed debate - As long as it looks decent and does the job I'm happy. Any other recommendations I should consider?

The bike came equipped with a Sugino RT crankset, which I'll be reusing (with perhaps some alteration in chainring sizing), and the BB has english threaded cups into a standard 68mm BB shell. The spindle's markings say "3R", which isn't included in Sheldon's BB size database. But by referring to his diagram of spindle lengths, I hope C&V will be able to help me find the appropriate length of Bottom bracket spindle for my bike.

My spindle measurements are as follows:
D= 127mm
A= 32mm
B= 52mm
C= 39mm

This doesn't seem to jive perfectly with Sheldon's tables, and the "3R" spindle isn't on his list...so can someone clear up the length of Spindle I need to go with to keep the Triple useable?

Thanks, C&V. I'll keep the rebuild updated on the thread as I gather the few additional parts I'll be needing.

-Maddox

A+B+C=D, except in your case. You need to re-measure.

What OFG said above.

If A, B and C are correct, you need a modern 130 mm cartridge style, which isn't available. Shimano only goes up to 127 mm. Essentially how you compute the symmetrical spindle size is by adding the asymmetry to the existing spindle size. I'd try to stick with what you have, if you can. You may be able to track down an appropriate spindle on E-Bay or somewhere else.

Tange stuff is always remarkably good for the price. I recently repacked a 1976-1977 Tange Falcon, and it's the nicest headset I've ever felt. I expect that Tange from VO would be much the same.

if overall (excluding a threaded portion for nuts, as on very lowend spindles) you lenght is 127MM but one side (drive) is longer then you need an english BB with a 127mm asymmetric spindle

something like this perhaps https://www.loosescrews.com/index.cgi...d=928438719973

Bianchigirll: I'm pretty sure that Shimano cartridge and many others like it are all symmetrical. Thus the need for Sheldon's good description.

it is quite possible they are, but at one time they did offer asymetrical. when cartridges came out not all cranks (OEM) were super low profile

Yikes, you are correct. I couldn't find my metric ruler last night, so I was doing some complicated equations and conversions in order to try and figure out the sizing on the spindle. I approximated with the conversions, and it showed in the numbers I provided. I remeasured. New dimensions below...

Thanks - I remeasured, and this is what I have for my spindle:

A (non driveside) = 34/35mm
B (center) = 52mm
C (driveside) = 42mm
D (total length) = 128/129 mm

I could be slightly off, but I'm pretty sure it's not 126mm in total length.

Photos: Top side says 3R, rear says L-310

WHy do you need a new spindle? That one looks pretty darn good to me. Are the races pitted? If not, and you just need to replace the cups and bearings, Niagara sells a cup and bearing set with lockring for like $7. If you need to juggle spindles for some reason (although if you're re-using the same crank, should not be necessary), drop me a PM and we'll spindle-talk.

Not really worried about the spindle, but I was thinking about getting a new sealed BB. I know it's far from necessary, it was just something I was thinking over. The spindle length question was part of a search for the correct BB size, so that my crank and chainstays will cooperate nicely.

Im not that savvy with the Shimano sealed BBs, but aren't they chainline adjustable by using spacers? I know redxj helped me set one up on my old Schwinn Voyageur SP, and it works just fine, even with 10 speed Ultegra.
