Specialized Stumpjumper Mystery
An acquaintance I did some bike work for owed me some money for about a year. No worries. He is moving to Florida and wanted to pay me so he gave me his "old bike"... It's a silver Specialized Stumpjumper in decent shape but I can find nothing about it after searching here and Googling it. The serial number is part of the mystery. AA455622. The other difference is it has braze-on's for two water bottles. Everything I am seeing for this era "Sport" only has one mount... Does anyone know anything or point me in the right direction please? I contacted Specialized via e-mail as well.

Thanks. And that is another part of the mystery... That one only has one water bottle mount. I bet it's serial number starts with an "M" too... Mine has braze-on's for two water bottles and has that "AA" serial number I can find nothing about. Thanks again. Great touring conversion on it.

I would not worry too much about te daul bottle brazeons, likely running production change.

David, before you do any converting, you might want to find out what that bike is worth. Very early Stumpys can sell for way more than the standard rigid fork MTB. I'm assuming you know that this is a top of the line MTB in its day.

The flat lugged fork tells me that it's pre-1984; they went to a lugged unicrown fork in 1985.
(I have a 1985 which I thought was from 1983. Great bike.)

Looking at Gomango's son's bike and the OP's I'd say they are a match (other than the poor quality derailler that someone put on at some point). I'd love to have a 1983 Stumpy.

this is a rather interesting repair. I would certainly look for good condition older RD to mate with this bike

My '86 Stumpjumper Sport came with XT Stag's Head and Specialized cranks. Miss that bike.

I have an '86 (I think) SJ Sport. I bought it about three years ago. Had a Deore LX RD that I've replaced. I have know way of knowing if it was original. I'm not that much of a Shimano historian.
Unicrown fork, horizontal dropouts, two bottle mounts, specialized cranks, cro-mo bars, bolt on wheels. The big chainring was a 50 which I'm pretty sure was non-factory. When I replaced that with a 46 and lowered the FD a bit, a few problems with the FD went away. The BB has conventional bearings. It was loose balls, but I dropped in some parts-bin caged balls when I counted an odd number.
I now have Nitto albatross bars on it with bar-end shifters. This is my main commuter.

All these long wheelbases are messing with my head. I'd love one of these bikes, but I'd feel like I was on an xtracycle. Look at all that space behind the seat tube!
