Red Flags and the Legnano...
Another forum member is helping me make a purchase of an old Legnano frame set.
However, the picture offered, in the Craigslist listing, is the same as a seven or eight year old picture, I stumbled upon while researching Legnano. Here is the good picture, published in 2007 and in the corner is the Craigslist picture.
Here is the page that links to the good picture. Click on the first picture titled - 1962_Roma_In_France
I am ready to go forward, but I worry about the gentleman who is facilitating for me. I do not want this very helpful individual to get scammed.
Any suggestions and he will likely be reading this thread...
Thanks

Unless the facilitator can positively ID the bike then I think you (or he) should rethink buying this.
Current photos of the exact bike are a must!

Tough situation. Have you asked the seller if the pic is actual bike? If the seller can't email some pics of actual bike, I'd stay clear.

The fellow, who is facilitating, will be meeting the seller this weekend, at a mutually agreed on location. I can understand why a seller would not want every Tom, Dick and Harry, no offense to anyone with those names, knowing where his vintage bike stash is. So, that to me is just caution.
Using an old picture, well that could well be acceptable also, provided that information is disclosed, which it is not. Here is the text content, with the price removed...
So, is it safe for the person helping me to view the frame set, in person, and then decide, based on purchase specifications (amount $$$, measured size, damage present, etc). If cash exchanges hands, and bike does at the same time, where is there something else we should be aware of.
Again, my concern if for the fellow helping me out. And, for what it is worth, I see this as a learning opportunity.

1950's Vintage Legnano frame/fork (campy drop outs) with a few other parts (bars/stem, seatpost, campy headset). This is one of the classics that has the bronze cast head tube badge. Picture shows complete bike, only f/f and parts listed above included. $??? OBO. This would make a great fixie or restoration build.

Is there any possibility the seller is selling the bike in the old photo? The same specimen, that is, not just the same make/model/year/condition etc?
If not, then yes, there's a little red light flashing somewhere.

The fellow forum member, who is helping me, has passed on emails from the seller. The bike in France belongs to Aldo(public information), but the present seller's name (private email) is different.
I am pretty sure the bike in the picture is not the bike for sale. That statement is based on some of that email content, suggesting the bike for sale does not sport original paint. I am guessing that the CL picture is probably one that closely resembles the frame set that is for sale.
I hope that I am just being over cautious but, as some hombre said to Steven Segal, "Careful never killed nobody...". Not sure if they were talking about bikes?

That photo is on Aldo Ross (a US collector) wool jersey gallery page:
https://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/v/...rance.jpg.html
It is probably a picture taken in France as the photo states and not his own bike. But it still seems odd for it to be the same bike now for sale as a frameset. Unless somebody parted out all that nice early Record stuff to cash in? I would be leary at best.

Can't your friend ask the seller if the bike for sale is the actual bike pictured, or one like it? It would make more sense to do that than ask us. If the seller says it is, then you know it's not true as the bike pictured is in France.

In my eyes, the bike is not sufficiently special to warrant any degree of risk, especially when you are involving somebody else. I don't think it is even worth discussing. Drop the idea of buying the bike.
