Here it is, my new Davidson

thanks everyone for their feedback on the other thread!

Showed up at the yard sale today, he had found the box of parts. My heart started sinking when I looked through it cause the prices were a lot more than what he had ballparked the day before. Asked how much, he said two hundred with the frame and various parts. Tried to look thoughtful, then handed over a couple bills.
Heres what I got.

Measured the frame, its like it was meant for me. 62cm seat tube, 57 top. flawless paint. I don't know what to do with it now, cause up to this point all I have ever ridden is stuff I pulled out of dumpsters.

That looks like it'll be a lot of fun.

The really nice part is that, although it's really nice, you still haven't put so much money into it. In theory, you shouldn't have to worry so much about it being chipped or stolen... Although I constantly find myself peering out the window at my junk city bike.

Looks like you need to inventory what you will still ned and build it up. Headset, hubs, spokes, rims, bottle cags, bar and stem, saddle, chain, brakes, maybe chainring bolts.
Well worth the effort.

This frame has never been built. At all. Was in the original box. There is not one flaw in the paint.
Heres what came with it.
Suntour accushift six speed indexed barcons, nos.
Suntour 34 tooth six speed freewheel. In box.
Suntour XC accushift rear detailed. In bag.
Suntour XC 9000 front derailed, in box.
Suntour sealed bottom bracket, the adjustable one, in box.
shimano Deore xt headset, in box.
Specialized 175mm cranks and one sugino 46 tooth ring, and a sakae 24 tooth ring, all in original packaging.
SR laprade seat post, in packaging.
one box of chain ring bolts.
One set of shimano m737 pedals, new in box, and three sets of same that have been used but feel in good condition.
One set of specialized sealed touring pedals, in box.
One plastic dork disk.
Dura ace cables and ferrels.
One Nashbar rear hub, in package. (The skewer says made in Italy!)

what at I have on hand is an unused nitto stem, and a nitto rando bar.
I have lots of cantis, but will need to get some levers.
I have a dura ace seven speed chain I hope might work.
Will probably buy a wheel set from velo orange or some such that will fit without having to spread the frame, have not measured it yet though.

In all, I expect to be selling some old Miyata frames, a trek or two, and various things like TA cranks, to fund doing this right.

Oh, and the reason I got it for 200.

The man who ordered the frame passed before getting it together. The man who sold it to me was his friend, and felt that I was a person who would appreciate what his friend started, since I ride so much, and already have several older bikes.

wow, those 737 pedals are worth a lot. So are the cranks and the touring pedals. That stuff is only NOS once and you need to decide if you should enjoy the satisfaction of building a perfect NOS bike or making a bunch of money and building it with used parts. Also super jealous as it is my size.

Edit: just read you have several sets of 737 pedals. You could probably come close recouping your outlay just selling the used pedals and probably could recoup in one go selling the NOS 737s on retro bike.

Cyclotoine. I agree, it's a real quandary. I can deal with six speeds, and the frame is spaced at 125mm, so options are limited.
On the 737's, just put a set on my ute bike, they rock. No float, but they are nice. Boat ankers, but nice.

I have some some gyromaster hubs that will fit, with ukia rims. Might build a wheel on the Nashbar hub, it's spaced right and feels solid, not like new Nashbar stuff.

My thoughts are that if I sell on the eBay, someone else will use the stuff and whatnot. The derailers are the real treat, but again, I want to ride this thing and for long distances.

Ugh, I am going to take it slow and make up my mind on these things as I go.

I say once in a lifetime find parts and all and the spirit of this would be to build it with as much that came with the build as possible. Maybe the exception is the pedals. Maybe you can trade on this site here somewhere or sell those on eBay to fund a wheel set. Awesome story and find.

Those gyromasters should suit the build perfectly. That is a top shelf wheelset. Even better if the Ukai are gloss black versions.

I have two sets, one black and one plain alloy. The black is on my maroon 81 Centurion Elite, and looks quite nice. Forty spoke rear. Just put in some phil wood bearings front and back, cant complain.

The silver set is also nice, 36/40, but not quite as true. Will have to spend a couple hours working on it again. I did break them down when I first got them and clean them up, so they are really pretty. Will probably get all new spokes this time around.

I really feel like I will genuinely belong to the C&V forum now! So many of you guys have such pretty and exotic bikes. This frame is not really like an Italian roady or a Raleigh club bike, but with this added to the stable I should be able to hold the head high!

The new frame is Sherwood green, so freaking gorgeous. Going to go full polished alloy in it.

about not keeping up with the Italians or the Raleighs. The bikes he made and sold in that era are probably
superior to most in either of those categories. If you really intend on riding it long distances and keeping
it forever..(and i don't see why not)..it's not a huge job to reset the rear dropouts to accommodate 7 or 8
speed wheel hubs, but get someone who knows what they're doing in this regard if you feel uncertain.

All you really need is sting, a vernier caliper for a few bucks, some sort of padded bending tool modeled along
the lines of the Park (even this is not essential), and some kind of dropout alignment tools.

We do this for people here at the co-op all the time.

One of my Davidson bikes is set up with brifters and an 8speed, the other is all Campy and a six in back.

Although I make fun of brifters all the time, if i were doing a whole lot of hills I'd think about doing this
eventually, but were i in your position, i think i'd just put it together with what i had, and modify it later
if i felt the need. Maybe you won't want to do it at all.

Some of the first gen Suntour indexed stuff is a little touchy to get dialed in right, but I don't know if
yours is that early that you need to be concerned about it. Someone else probably knows.

Well, I was messing around with wheels today and found two things. First, I don't think that the frame will take more than 32s comfortably, not a deal breaker as that's what I run, and second that a eight speed shimano cassette hub fits right in.
So, with this new knowledge, and the fact that I was doing some pricing research on ebay(I know that there is a difference in what someone asks and what somethings worth) I may try to find some eight speed bar ends and go for a more modern ride, saving the six speed cassette and shifters.
The frame has really short chainstays for a tourer. But the bottom bracket is pretty low. All this means that this may indeed be the perfect tourer for my style, which is ultra light with just bar and seat bags, sometimes low riders on the front.
Comparing it to some of my favorite frames, this really could be custom made for me. As soon as I can I'm taking it to one of the only shops I trust to have the headset pressed in, about the only thing I don't feel comfortable doing myself. Could take a while, it's a fifty mile drive.

That's sort of the story here. There is a guy in town, but in my personal opinion he runs in a wheel all night and eats pellets. There is a shop 50 miles off where the owner never makes fun of my old bikes, and just reaches for the coffee cans filled with old misc. when he sees me coming.

I like the sound of the second guy, Shipwreck. To find my guy like that, I have to hike a bit too. Anybody with an early sixties Frejus track bike and a 72 Holdsworth hanging on the wall of his shop is OK in my book. And I trust him. Though I built my own tool to press in head sets.

So anyway, very great score you made there. I'm glad you decided to jump on it. You got a rare and excellent deal. Hope you love it.

Little update. Took it to the shop, had the headset done. You know you have a good bike shop when the owner decides not to sell you some cantis because they aren't good enough for your new 20 year old frame!


This is sort of a test build for size, this frame is going to be perfect for me. how amazing is that.

Anyway, now I have some choices to make. Do I break open the Suntour accushift cx9010 derailers and use them, or try to source something else? Do I use the bar ends that are indexed to 6 speed and set them to friction, or do I use some almost NOS suntour friction bar ends I have now?

Should I buy a new crank, like the sugino here Sugino XD2 Crank, Triple 46x36x24 or should I suck up my dislike of anything specialized and use the Nos crank that was in the box? Its the perfect length.

And I got some silver Jaguar housing, but am wondering if I should use the coiled housing that came with the suntour bar ends instead, if I decide to use them(very likely, they are on almost all my bikes).

The benefit of using all the old stuff is that it will work fine, and will be a lot cheaper, leaving me some more cash to buy a nicer wheelset.

Just throwing it out there now that I have pics of the bike with some parts. I have some time, cause I have to shift the rear wheel a little to the right to center it up.
