1987 Alan with Campagnolo = confusion
I recently picked up this 1987 Alan Road Bike. The decals are not original so I am not sure of the model. I am new to Campy components and find the model designations confusing. Can anyone "enlighten" me and let me know what I have. Is c record the same as Chorus? Help.

Hi Willyone, welcome to the forums. Nice bike you got there! How dop you know the decals are not original?
The Campy components are from Campagnolo, very different from Campagnola, that manufactured (ugly) clothing.
They look like Chorus to me, which is not the same as C-Record. C-Record was top of the line at the time and Chorus came later I believe as second in line.

I believe these only had a frame model but I could be wrong. Usually you order a Alan frame from a dealer and put one of several 'kits' offered by the importer or just build it however you want.

I think that this is the "Super Record" model ALAN frameset. The frame might be from around 1983, the earliest (judging from the older rear dropout design it has), but they might have made this particular style frame and graphics well into the mid 80's, so it might be an 86/87. With the more than decent Campy components on the bike from the later 80's, and it looks like it would clean up very nicely, I think $350 was a pretty good buy, but remember to check all tube and lug joints for soundness. Just do a good search for threads on ALANs on this forum and you can find tips on how to inspect the frame and waht to look out for. Especially look into topics about head lug cracking that happens to some of these frames.
Enjoy the bike! ALAN designed the frame geometry on these very nicely. I have one (albeit the CF version) and it's one of the best handling and riding bike I ever owned.

Beautiful bike, as mentioned be sure to watch the steering head lug for vertical cracking. I've only seen one of these frames in person and it had a cracked head lug.

A beauty with one of the prettiest Campy groups ever. The groupset alone is worth $350, maybe more.

I have gone over the Bike with a fine tooth comb no cracks anywhere. It has a cheap set of Alez Rims on it now that I am going to replace. There was an spare set of Wheels with the purchase but they aren't worth discussing. However the Hubs on the spares are Suntour Sprint 36h Pista and they are in very nice condition.

As others wrote, parts are Chorus, except the frontderailleur, which is C-Record.

Too cold to ride? that gives you plenty of time to clean and overhaul.
That first generation Chorus has been my favorite group since it was introduced. I especially love the brakes, I have some version of Monoplanors on several of my road bikes. I even took of some Record Ti dual pivot brakes because I prefer the look and handling qualities of the Monoplanors.
