My first epic ride.... well, sort of..

35+ mph winds that changed direction to face me head-on every time I steered away from them, lots of hills and 11 miles in 35 minutes. I'm dead knackered, but for me, it was an epic ride. Anybody else fighitng the gusts in the Windy City today?? After 2 weeks or so of riding, it is getting easier... I know that on day 1 I couldn't have made this ride in this time; and can't wait to see what I'm capable of by year's end.

I'm reminded of the scene in the movie American Beauty when Lester (aka Kevin Spacey) starts jogging and remarks that every once in a while it's nice to be amazed when you do something you didn't think you ever could.. Which brings me to my final rambling though, and partial thread-jack, great job Tom for helping be the inspiration for me to get on my bike and ride. The PSA, news clip, etc. on the Ride are awesome.. Simply awesome. Next year I'd like to shake your hand after we finish the ride together.

Cool beans! I'm doing Tour de Cure next year, that's a guarantee! You'd be welcome to join the team!

On another note, I screwed up my knee on KM 69. Had to ride the SAG truck in, too painful to pedal! It's icepacked now....no swelling, so I'm fairly sure it's inflamed tendons. I'll be seeing the Dr Monday or Tues if it still hurts!

Well, nothing snapped or popped, just got quickly and progressively painful. No instability in the knee either, so I suspect the hills and headwind got me is all!

By the way, Chunky D did the ride with me and did finish the 75K. That man is a rider! He got a huge charge out of us hitting 42.4 MPH on one of the downhills too!

the headwinds got me today also. i guess its the mid wests turn to be blown on today.
i almost turned around early, but i carried on. i figured they would be at my back on the way back.
i seem to be able to crawl up the hills better everytime now. frequent riding does work.
you keep it up and, i will keep it up to.deal ?

18.9 MPH with 34 MPH headwinds and hills is rather epic, I agree.

I was also feeling the winds today. Why does it always seem that there are headwinds when doing big climbs (for me) and the wind is usually at my back on the way down?

I did the same thing on Thursday, well kind of. Got a little too zealous on the "long ride in" thanks to 60 degree morning temps, so I pushed HARD. Well, Friday I was rewarded with a VERY unhappy knee!

However, rest and ibuprofen last night seem to have done the trick. I did 15 easy miles today, and it actually did the whole going from worse to better thing.

Great to hear, though! I'm going to have to join you two on a ride sometime, sounds like you guys have a great time out there.

Today I set out to do the same route that kicked my butt earlier in the week. This time I rode my atlantis, with its many gears for touring. The Atlantis is heavier, but as long as you're not worried about speed, it can pretty much get you wherever you need to go.

Started against the headwinds, and before I knew it, I had already gone up whatever hill I thought was so horrible last time. I had gone down into my lowest gear a couple times, but was able to just spin my way up. Suddenly, I was by the turn off to the state park where I usually do my ride. I was feeling pretty good, and knew it was with the wind on the way back, so I thought I would try to achieve one of my goals early: biking to the my park ride instead of driving there.

Went a few miles in the park and then started home. By the time I got home, it was 17 miles! New record for me. However, I got a terrible headach from the sun and had to take a nap for a couple hours. But my body doesn't hurt from the ride.

The Atlantis was so comfortable to ride, but it was a lot more work. Those big fat tires are a joy, but my MPH were slower. But who cares! I was tempted to do 3 more, but I thought that might be stupid, since my legs felt kind of used up. It was enough to know that next time I did it, I would be able to do 20, which is kind of a milestone, isn't it!

Brodie, I am 20 (well, 22) and I have no problem spinning up a mini mountain either. I think that if I stood up and powered through it, I'd pass out at the top.

I almost packed it in today too, at mile 5 and facing Lactic Acid Hill into 15 mph headwinds. I told myself if I made it to the top I would allow myself to turn back if I still wanted to. When I got to the top, I was feeling more comfortable, and chose to take the steep downhill that led to the rest of my ride (19 miles).

You guys and gals keep pushing, and I will too.

I can relate, I ht 47.7km yesterday, and wondered, should I try for the 50 mark, after all I have a route that could have done it, then I thought, nah, make that next weeks challenge

Sounds like you need to bump up the hydration a bit to avoid those headaches! Give it a shot ands see....

Great job on the new personal best, by the way!

Yesterday I busted my ass pedaling 25 miles into the wind up here on the great plains of North Dakota. The ride back made it worth while though.

I still miss the hills of PA.

Nah, solveg has the same problem I do--if it's hot, and the sun is glaring, I WILL get a migraine, no matter how much hydration I do. The migraine trigger is the heat itself, secondary trigger is glare.

Yes. Heat and sunlight. I used to have to ride at dawn before I figured out I should wear sunglasses. I'm like a bicycling vampire.

I was really trying to drink water. I went through 2 bottles in an hour. But thanks to Tom Stormcrowe, I realized I have brazeons for a third* water cage, so I'll try to drink even more.

AAh, sounds like you have a touring bike then!

On another note: Don't ya love the reverse raccoon suntan from cycling in sunglasses?

Man, I hate the wind. lol I'll take a long steep climb instead any day. At least I can usually see the end of that! When it is windy here, I usually seem to have a tail wind when I go out and then have to fight it coming back.

I got out for about 5 miles today. It was only slightly windy. Hadn't been out in a week (work and then 3 days of camping set me back), though and it felt real good to be able to get in even a short ride.
