I'm right there with you. L4 - L5. Shooting pain down the leg? Standing up straight is torture? Yep. My physical therapist tells me that sitting and lying down, the things that make me feel better, are to be avoided, while the exercises he's given me bring the pain. I feel you, man.

Be patient, the bike will still be there when you can ride her.

nah, my muscle around them went out and those are causing the pain. kinda my fault for no continuing the lower back exercise. once is a while my legs feel numb. i can't sit or stand without pain, lying down on my side or belly helps the most.

i'm luck i got my back brace and walker! i'm not even 30 yet and i feel like an old man............

I hear you on feeling like an old man, though I'm a little older than you. I'm using a cane right now, and my students are worried about me getting old and feeble.

Numb legs is a scary one, as I'm sure you know. I hope you get better soon. Are you going back to the doctors?

And you were just standing when it happened. I know, Right?

I have had a lifetime of my back just suddenly going "Twang" (sound of muscles pulling off center) and it hurts so bad I want to go to the hospital. Usually lasts a couple days for me.

I at least have wanted to be able to say; "How did I hurt my back? Well, I was being chased by ninjas, or I was saving this baby from drowning, or something really cool.

But, the story almost always is the same.

"My back? Well, I was in the shower and I reached for the shampoo. Or, I was peeling this potato at the sink and POW! out went the back

My personal favorite (that happens to me all the time) is, "How did I hurt my back? Well, I went to bed. Then I woke up. That's it. I must have SLEPT WRONG!"

What the heck? How can I sleep wrong? Stupid back.....

1) "stupid obama care" - you are aware that only a tiny handful of provisions have gone into effect since the bill was signed, and that while it's a mixed bag of good & bad the bipartisan health care reform bill has nothing to do with your losing health insurance or the tripling of premiums in 2 years before it was passed?
2) I had bad L4-L5 pain a few years ago. PT and exercises cured it. Last spring the pain returned big time, and I herniated the disc. Don't do this. Rest, take it easy, and start your PT exercises again when it doesn't hurt.
3) I just got a used copy of "Treat your own back" by Robin McKenzie. $3.95 shipped on abebooks.com. This gets rave reviews and at first glance seems like it could be useful.
4) a lumber cushion might be the best money you'll ever spend
5) Recumbent bikes are like magic for your lower back.

Let's keep this nonpolitical, please. I've never had to move a Clydes thread to P%&R yet, and this is the only forum that hasn't happened in now.

noted Tom.

So, i am able to move and ride today. A few hours of watching tv after getting home from work i decided to adjust the gears and brakes on my new bike. the drive way is 30 degree incline so its perfect for brake testing.

test one, brakes suck. test two, brake continue to suck. test three, yay it stops. 2 minutes later i crash, brakes went off without me touching it. busted up my elbow. pissed off i stormed up to the front door of the house to adjust them. test it again and it works. back brakes still doesn't work.

front derailleur doesn't work and i wanna kill this bike! i'm returning it back to amazon, never gonna buy a bike outside a bike shop again.

hands hurt a lot, forgot gloves. no more road bikes, they are evil.

Yikes - looks sore. Did you provide a link to the bike - I'd love to check it out? How did the brakes "go off" without you touching them?

Dont lose the faith - the fine folks on this forum will have you rolling along in no time

Denali is a bottom end Department store bike. Please don't judge all road bikes by this one.

Looks like a reasonable starter bike with good reviews. Did the brake simply lock-on by itself causing you to fall? I wonder if the brake itself is loose? I'd start there and check that all bolts etc are nice and tight... My first bike was from BikesDirect ($270)and there's no better way IMHO than buying a budget bike to see if you want to stick with the hobby. I can tell you of at least two people that I know that spent $2000+ and the bike is now gathering cobwebs in the garage. I did eventually spend $2000+ for a Spec. Roubaix but only after riding my BD bike for some time.

Check your machine over - get out there and ride it like you stole it
