I'm not getting what you mean by "cut that dangerous steer tube". Maybe I'd see it if I adjusted things but right now there isn't anything sticking above it that would present a problem. Do you have an image I can see to get a visual? I might understand a bit more if I could see.

something like this would be classified as very dangerous. Both to fork and to the rider. https://cdn.media.cyclingnews.com/201...e_side_600.jpg

I have a third of that on my super6 and want to cut it so bad, but I also want to change the stem out to something I can't afford right now.

But that stubby bit w/ the right amount of force on the inside of your leg in the event of the roll over really sucks......I know

Ah! I was kindof thinking that but didn't see it in my head. Thanks for the image and thanks for the thoughts on how to handle it.

I'll bet that hurt.

Way stronger than he was last week! Eventually I had to let him pull away. At one point he was a speck in the distance. I keep thinking about the pain he must be in holding a pace that I've never seen him attain before. To date I always held back and he would be wheezing a bit. I get near West Carrollton and he has already turned around and headed back. As he passes me I notice....... it's not him. Same basic height and build and a long sleeve shirt (not same color).

I stop at the rest area in WC and in pulls my co-worker. *I* was trying to keep up who I thought was HIM and HE was trying to keep with ME.

In the end it made a great workout. Not the kind I was looking for today but I'll certainly take it.
I will say that on this ride I came closer than I have ever come to throwing up on the bike. Overall it most likely lowered my average speed because for a bit I pedaled slowly just to recover. I'm going to do a recovery ride tomorrow then on Wednesday I'm going to start in the same spot and push again and keep up the pace for just a bit longer. Again it will hurt and hopefully I don't throw up. Over a period of time I'll do that once a week or so. Other days I'll just do a smooth ride and sometimes the dreaded all out intervals.

Also.... the end of this ride is a hill. I get to push as hard as I need to in order to whip myself good.

WHIP IT GOOD!

WM,

You have the cycling bug and now you are doing intervals, meaning pushing yourself to you max, resting and doing it over again. Yes, this is what builds speed, strength and character. Wait a minute, you already have character! And yes, it hurts!

Ride on and Love DEVO,
Mike

Thanks 1speeder! I've always tried to find things to train my mind to allow me to push further and harder, be it physically or whatever it is.

Also, I'm a Mike as well. Not many of use around!

In a few months my work is moving their facilities. My lunch time rides will be more interesting (some trees, etc) but my commute will be 19.5 miles ONE WAY if I don't cut it by driving to a parking spot and coming in. I'm excited for the move because we will have an "ok" gym where I can get in a bit of targeting weight training.

I post this here because today I and a coworker that rides with me during lunch went on a "team building" adventure to the facilities and rode our bikes along the route that I'd be using to come into work. Didn't take it the whole way home of course but we did explore and such.

Is there a flattish bike path you could take most of the way to the new office? Test the ride out on the weekend, just to see if you could handle it. Even commuting 3 times a week would cut your gas bill in half, and make you stronger on the bike for your longer weekend rides.

I have a 20 mile commute one way, but mine is almost all rural roads with up to 1000ft elevations (according to mapmyride, I personally think their steeper). I have no problems riding these roads but once I get into town I seem to get in front or behind some idiot driver...that just ruins the experience for me. This summer I hope to do this commute more often, but I don't think I'll ever be brave enough to ride in the winter, I tried it last month 3x a week and no matter how warm I dressed I couldn't keep up the proper cadence with the freezing temperatures.

Anyway, congrats on the 161 miles so far this year. I would exceed that if I counted those miles I commuted, but I don't take my bike computer those days, I only track recreation/fitness rides which I haven't done much of yet

I've been hovering around -110 mile behind the pace. Weather is starting to ease up so I'll get ahead of that soon.

I track everything! Even if I don't use my bike computer I do the route by hand and could those miles.

The daily distance doesn't scare me as I would get use it to it quickly. The TIME is the overriding thing. My daughter is currently in fastpitch softball (school ball) and they play several times a week with games starting at 5pm. That means my day is compressed and I have to run a tight shop to be able to commute.

However..... now that I have two bikes I can keep one at work. That means if I can't do a commute I can ride during lunch. If I happen to be able to commute HOME then I can use that bike to ride home then back in the next day. And so on.

As far as flatness my route isn't challenged by that. Other than one small hill my route is either a gradual incline (one way) or a gradual decline (the other way).

My largest hurdle is that I had to go to sleep. I'm a night guy. I have to retrain my body to get to bed earlier so I can get up and get to work at a reasonable time so I can leave to get to my daughter's games. There are some games I'll be able to leave work a bit early and bike to then bike home.

19.5 is doable. Especially if that gym has a shower!

I'm doing 25 with almost 1900 feet of climb. But only once a week, mostly because I'm damn slow.

Time is the biggest deal. I spoke about it a post or so above but it is fastpitch softball season and game are at 5pm. I'm also building a Plan B income business so that takes some time.

I'll be about to do it sometimes. Also mentioned above is that I can ride during lunches to get in some miles. I'd prefer to ride in during the morning, do resistance training during lunch and then ride home after work. That's what I WANT and not what I'll GET most days.

I'll just do the best I can.

I get that...

My Daughter lives with me full time, and my SO lives 50 miles away on the other side of our metro area. That and a job that is really great, but can consume my life at a moments notice. Everything gets shifted around based upon the priorities of the moment.

I wish time was the only reason I aim to commute once a week. I still have to recover.

It is marvelous that your lifting as well as riding!

Longest single ride of the year though it was real close to a daily total I had several weeks ago. Rode into another town to drop my taxes off at my CPA. Along the way I went to an area that usually has issues when we get a bunch of rain. I figured the river had calmed down enough do that it would not be an issue. It had. HOWEVER... there was runoff from surrounding areas and some spots had an inch or so of standing water. About a mile of that on and off and me hoping that the next one would be the last (then I'd take a different route home) and I came to a low laying area that I wasn't going to cross. I had to backtrack through all that I had just navigated through. The bad part was I learned that my new bike doesn't deal with mud as well as my hybrid. This this river mud caked up into my brakes and then when I came out of the mud sticks and leaves would mix in. I stopped several times to clean things out and then when I was all the way out I did the best cleaning job I could while on the trail.

At the very end of my ride is a somewhat short but nasty hill. That segment is defined on strava so today I busted it up that hill. I came very very close to throwing up about halfway but I just dialed it back until the feeling passed then I hit it again. I got the "I'm going to throw up" feeling about four times. When I got home I looked at my times and I was way off. WAY off. I'm going to have to get much stronger and make better gear selections to approach the top time.

Total distance = 27.6 miles

Ride felt great except I'm still feeling stressed in my lower back. In not used to engaging in effort in a bent over road bike position. Hold the prison jokes, please. I'm going to have to work on my lower back flexibility and probably just get used to being in elongated configurations.

My legs felt good and the only reason I'm feeling it is that I hit it hard on a few straights and of course the hill at the end.

Nice effort!

Funny how odd things happen when you're out and about...

Interesting mileage/goal presentation.
Are you using a tool or spreadsheet?

A spreadsheet I built. It's all data driven and I just have to change a few things from year to year and it will calculate things for me.

I'm willing to share if anybody wants to use it. I'll probably change it a bit as an idea hits me.

Nice...
I hadn't thought of yearly, nor daily targets let alone year over improvements or percentage complete...

Weekly, I'm shooting for > 100...

I know I won't be riding daily but I want to be THINKING OF IT daily so I put that pressure on me.

As for yearly miles if I do hit that mark next year I will probably keep it the same. I have other obligations and I just want to hit what I feel I should.

I made the mistake last summer of increasing my monthly goals by 100 miles after hitting the mark, I don't think I made it past September. I hit 100 in July, 200 in August, but couldn't hit 300 in September so I made 300 a goal for October knowing I couldn't ride that many miles then (Sept-Dec seems like the busiest time of the year for me). This season I'm shooting for 100 miles a week, from May through August. I would've already start but I've been off to a lazy start this month, making up excuses to drive instead of ride. I think my daily 40 mile R/T commutes in the bitter cold sucked the fun out of riding for me, I hope as the weather warms up I can turn that around and start riding any and every where again. My anual goal is double what I rode last year (1220) so 2440 total miles, which I should exceed if I can do 100 miles a week
