Well, I decided to just let it come to me - be inspired as it were. So I put the name idea on the back burner the last couple of days.

For the last few days I have ridden a few kilometers and about an hour after arriving home I find myself thinking that I would like to go for another ride. Today, we were going to meet some friends for dinner. It was about 14km away. As a new rider, that each way would mean the longest, non-stop ride for me, also, the ride there and back combined would represent the longest total distance riding in one day. So it was a great personal challenge and I figured it would satisfy the curiosity of wanting to ride shortly after completing one.

For those that don't know, I live in China. Because of this I see Chinglish everywhere. Poorly translated or downright wrong English mixed into the weirdest things. I had to go to the restroom while at the restaurant and looked up at the signs to make sure I was going through the proper door. The sign over the men's room said 'Gentlemen's Room' much as expected. But over the lady's room the sign read 'Tady's Room'.

Instantly I knew that I had just discovered the name of my new bike. I set two personal bests that day (longest nonstop ride and longest distance in a day). So it seemed fitting that something from that day would inspire me. The fact that it is Chinglish fits me, an American living in China where my own English gets more lost with every passing day. Plus, it makes me smile.

My Trek Marlin 7 29er is now formally know as Tady!

Maybe after riding the moose today, I'll just sit and stare at my road bike and see what happens.

I like that we name things, silly as it may be. And there are wonderful ones here.

Gran Turismo? That is a good name...

Why yes it is, Mr. Nut.
I put the Roubaix in the shop today for a 10,000 mile / 2 Year check up.
So out came my trusty Gran Turismo, retro conversion.
(Retro to modern upgrades: 700c wheels, Tektro long reach brakes, Sora/Tiagra Triple Drive Train with Shift/Brake levers)
I snuck in a 13 miler with 1,000 ft. of climbing. Rode it on an 80 mile trip this last, 2014, summer too.
A fine bike.

I have three bikes but only my oddball trekking bike has earned its own name. It is a Novara Safari, which is an oddball-looking bike to begin with. It is also the first bike that I have swapped out bits and pieces from other bikes to make more comfortable. I call the bike "Funkenstein." By the end of my solo bike trek down the CA coast, I was talking to that bike like Tom Hanks talked to his volleyball.

The bike that took me from gasping at 4 miles to 400 miles weeks, a Cannondale Adventure 400, is "Broom". (Picture Margaret Hamilton in The Wizard of Oz.)

And my titanium bike, the one that then inspired my husband to buy himself a ti bike, is "Vector" -- both in the "speed and direction" sense and the "vector of contagion" sense. His bike, which reportedly was made from titanium reclaimed from a MiG aircraft, is of course "Ti Fighter".

I have 3 bikes now. All are named and came about by a throw away reference to each of them at one time or another.

I have -

1) Specialized Roubaix 2014 - "Ruby"
2) Giant Trance 2 2015 - "Tommy Trance"
3) Reid X229 - "Reidy"

I used to name my bikes when I had only had two bikes. After about 15 bikes have passed through my hands in the last two years, It felt like naming the cows in the field.

Off-topic, but I know a guy who keeps hundreds of chickens. He has named every one, takes pictures and catalogs them so he remembers them.

I used to make fun of people who named their bikes but I realize all of mine are named... just makes it easier to explain which bike I am talking about...

My road bike is "Hello Kitty" due to the bike job. A fully custom Landshark with custom paint, on my first ride someone asked me if I got the bike from WalMart, thus "Hello Kitty"...

I have three Santa Cruz Superlights so they need nicknames: Niner, Chick bike and Wee Bike. Niner is obvious, my 29er. Chick Bike is a powder blue Juliana and Wee is my original bike as it seems so small compared to the newer bikes.

And lastly my commuter is "Frankenwienie" - made from tossed off parts...

Picking a name: It should come naturally and suit the bike or situation and what you would feel comfortable saying... very personal; like nicknames for a lover!
