Video: Morning Commute

Hi,

Me again. I took one of my morning commute helmet cam vids and played around with windows movie maker. I am such a newb to this video editing stuff. Love it or hate it. Thanks in advance for watching. Press the HQ button.

I see I screwed up one spot. I forgot to add the double speed to one small section in the middle. Oh well.

Nice. I missed the spot without the fast editing, even though I knew about it first. No biggie.

I remember when I first started posting vids here. A lot of folks tried to diminish my work because I enhanced the speed. But it makes sense to do it. You fit more into the time frame at hand, the whole thing is less boring, and upbeat music matches the cycling rhythms better.

I like watching all of the new video footage from members of BF for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that I am now vindicated on the topic of speeding up the video.

MP, that's an interesting sig about city riding. Spot on. And I really don't do city riding, other than maybe a 1 mile stretch in the afternoon where I have to mix it up with the suburban rat race on their way home. A little bit of danger definitely spices up the ride.

Nice vid, btw, les. A bit of advice though. I think you are going a little heavy on the video speed up. If it's done right, it kinda just looks like you're just hammering it real hard. If it's overdone, it painfully obvious that it's been sped up. I think joey does a good job at this.

Ofcourse it could be that you are both speeding it up equally, but, you're just a lot faster that joey.

Nice video. I do think you border on not really needing the speedup version in this video. Almost like over riding your headlights at night. Still I like watching other people's commutes.

I like this angle much better, or did you just have a visor on with the same angle?

According to his GPS, he is faster by 2 mph on average (best I can tell).

My vids are beefed up 33% or 50% depending on what looks best to me and how much footage I have. I don't like my vids going much over 10 minutes. 6 minutes is ideal IMO.

People's attention spans are short and I can't imagine that many commuters' rides are captivating enough to watch very much of in real time.

Besides, I'm supposed to be working.

Man, nice commute. I think I counted about 5 cars and 4 cyclists. You had the roads to yourself!

One other note. The OPs camera is much wider angle than mine, so you see the road under you and the trees next to you going by and looking really fast. Much like human peripheral vision.

Man... that cracks me up, my commute is nonstop urban streets with traffic the entire time. You're bombing through empty office parks, on singletracks, MUPs, sidewalks, parking lots... wild.
Is your commute only 5 minutes then?

Love it!, especially the transitions they are almost unnoticeable. Let me know how the new mount comes out. I am also working on yet another, We are going to extend it out in front of the bike and face back at me, this way I will be just floating there while everything zooms past me I think it will be killer. Keep em coming, also wheres the video sticky!!!!!!

Thanks for the ride. This one I think I would have liked at normal speed. Just makes me feel slow.

I agree Joey,

Speeding it up does have it's time and place, for the reasons you've mentioned. I won't use it all the time, but can see myself using it from time to time.

It's your video. Your artistic vision, so do what you like. If you expect views though, you do have to give people some of what they want to see.

You seem to have found the right formula.

Lets call it the fly on the helmet view,

Acutally that was a mistake. I mounted the camera bracket backwards and it set the camera further back than I wanted.

I built the video around the music. I heard the song and though it would work. So I needed to get all the footage I wanted to show in less than 3 mins. Speeding it up was the only way.

Some people are fascinated by other peoples commutes. I know I am.

The videos on my vimeo page with the most views are those that show my full commute or most all of it.

Those vids are 12-19mins long.

No, my commute takes 17-20mins. Depending on traffic, lights and how hard I want to ride at 7:30 in the morning. My best time for that route is 17mins 14 seconds.

Thanks RCC,

I used my jerry rigged handlebar mount on my Friday morning commute. It didn't work as expected. The weight of the camera had too much leverage against all 3 pivots points and it wouldn't stay put. I think a few thin lock washers will solve the problem.

Yeah, a video sticky is probably a good idea. I know other forums have them, but that said you'll probably get more views posting links in here or which ever forum your video relates to.

Thanks Pete,

I'm using windows movie maker. I only see the option of double speed which you can keep layer on top of itself to make it even faster. There is a one times slow down effect. Maybe if I add the double speed effect then the 1 times slow down I will get one times speed up...lol. Going to play with that.

Yeah, I would like to know what video editing program Joey is using. I would like the option of fine tuning the speed. What program are you using Joey?

The sections of the video that look particularly fast, I am going reasonaly fast in real time, 25-30mph.
No, I don't always ride that fast. That was a time trial like effort to look good for the vid. That was a personal best time for my commute which I beat 3 days later. I recorded that commute to, it's posted on the commute forum somewhere.

I was surprised to see the complaints about speeding the video up. Maybe on a trail or something real time would be effective but I think on just riding in the street it has to be sped up. Just a difference in opinions I guess. I like them either way you dice it though Les :-)
