Is there a light that goes on near your computer that lets you know when people are having a little fun on this board? Maybe a klaxon bleating an alarm to keep you posted as to the lack of misplaced, insecurity-fueled, serious-faced bad attitude?
I mean, I'm new, but you seem to be Janey-on-the-spot with crapping on harmless fluff, like a conversation on a message board some how reflects poorly on you and how seriously you take yourself.
I guess what I'm saying is: you always seem to notice the warning light that lets you know somebody is enjoying themselves, and I'd like to use it as a rear blinky; it seems reliable, bright, and easy to spot and I'm sick of getting granny-clipped with side view mirrors on night rides.

As someone fairly new, you have yet to appreciate the general whinnying that takes place on BF about poor crapped on bicycle commuters who are mis-understood by the police, by pedestrians, by co-workers, by drivers, and oh.. hell... just about anybody on the face of the planet. So when a co-worker asks a ridiculously obvious question about what your doing as an attempt to initiate a conversation, be sure to come up with some really spiffy come-backs to make him/her feel really stupid. We’ll call this “light hearted fluff.”
Then be sure to come back and report your workplace abuse in another thread.
I'm all for having fun. The irony is sweet.....

Most of the responses in this thread have been more along the lines of serious answers, rather than simple smartass retorts. And I do think it's valuable to educate people on why you might enjoy riding in the winter. Particularly if the questioner does ride a bike sometimes in the nicer months, they may eventually be convinced that winter is a good idea. It took many repetitions of comments like "it's warmer than waiting for a bus," and "not really if you dress for it" by friends before I was convinced to try riding once there's snow on the ground.

I've never been asked this question... Once I got an evil look and was called a crazy bastard by some old lady while I was patching a flat in front of walmart in 25 degree weather...

This thread pops up right after it happened to me today. Didn't have a witty reply but said "it's not that bad." Sometimes cold is just relative.

Not safe for work
"It is but I have still have lots of chocolate from Christmas".
That went over well with the two elderly ladies who sounded concerned for me when I was carrying my bike up the steps in front of my apartment building. But most people who ask are more impresses than questioning my sanity. It's usually during a summer heatwave when my sanity comes up for debate.

I work at the LBS, and would get more remarks if I were to drive in to work. But if someone asked me if it was too cold, and I didn't want to make a wise-guy comeback, I could point out that driving my car involves some or all of the following:
1) sweeping snow off of it. Brrrr.
2) scraping frost off the windows. Brrrr.
3) getting in and shivering as I drive. Brrrr. (no, I'm not going to let it idle in place for 10 minutes, cars are getting stolen here while warming up, plus it wastes gas while contributing to bad air quality)
4) just about the time the heater's putting out any heat, I'm at the destination and it's time to get out again. Wait, why am I doing this again.

Anyway, as far as I can tell, no one in Scandinavia would ever ask you if it was too cold to ride, after all, they actually plow the bike paths when it snows! I loved it when I was in Umeå in the winter and the choice was often whether to ski or bicycle in to work.
