I looked to see if I was just repeating someone else's post on the subject. I couldn't find that I was. Sorry if so. If not, see here: Smart Wheel will revolutionize commuter cycling.

"A smart phone can also be used to set the desired top speed the wheel will reach, once the relevant app has been downloaded."

Why does everyone claim that adding a phone app makes an ordinary product incredible?

No thanks. I'd rather get a Vespa. If I'm going to be lazy, I'd rather do it with some style.

Good idea this wheel! But please forget about the security part. A 500$ will attract a thief like flies on a rotten banana. The tracking device? Thieves leave the wheel there or remove the tracking part or whatever it's not like the smart wheel is not visible

But I need the exercise. And I don't have a smart phone.

This has been around a while. I think there was one called a "Danish Hub" or somesuch, around 2009. Also used a smart phone.

Part of the allure of cycling is that, in spite of how much I suck, it's still up to me to get the deed done. If you want basically an e-bike, buy a damn e-bike. If you want an electric scooter, buy a damn electric scooter.

I'm sticking with my dumb wheels for now. When you have one that makes a shot of espresso, let me know.

If they make it nearly as light as my wheel and only make it a dyno that can run some hi-power lighting then I'm all for it.

Too little oversight for me to send my money to someone on kickstarter. Get a small business loan and start the company. If its good people will buy it. If you can't get a small business loan then get a better business plan.

They're actually an established company already. They began making these electric bike/scooter things a couple of years ago.

Not interested, my pedals still work.

Also I think an established company that's using Kickstarter should not be encouraged.

I'm not remotely interested in buying one but it's still a damned ingenious bit of kit...

Is this new? I see these kind of rear hub powered e-bikes on my commute almost every day. Maybe it's the phone app which makes it special? (insert confused smiley)

I already own a Vespa and I look damn fantastic on it so I'm not really interested in this for myself. But, IMHO anything that might get more people on bikes and out of their cars is worthy of support.

IF this thing is as good as it promises to be then I think there could be a pretty significant market for it. The more people on 2 wheels the better, Im preaching to the choir here I know.

Hub motors are not new and neither is the concept of using your smartphone as the controller (assuming you have a smartphone), but this might be the first* to mount the battery to the wheel instead of the frame or top/side of a rack.

*Not positive, as e-bikes are too expensive for my budget and so I haven't really brought myself up to speed and my Clyde butt would likely not see the range numbers any kit advertises
