I really like this suggestion and think a new thread is in order. I like the way @acidfast7 laid out the post. I also like the existing thread, but see this one as serving a different function. I wish I had the trained eye of someone like @noglider, but I'm not there yet. This forum has made me much better at "reading" a bike, and I can imagine that this new thread could be a great way for me to get better and for newcomers to learn a lot about the choices seasoned commuters make and why they make them.

Except that you are risking a week-long ban with that non-drive side photo!

A trained eye won't tell you everything looking at a pic or two.

I understand some don't want to be bothered listing details/reasons/costs, and I suppose that's ok too. But some of us like to read it, even if we have a trained eye or two.

The right gear combination is what ever gear you're going to start off in when riding, no matter the subform. Parking (and photoing) your bike in top gear doesn't make it look any better or faster, it's just plain goofy.

Anyone can find the prices of bikes and parts, and the total cost depends on so many variables -- whether bought new or used, as a complete bike or assembled from frame and components, bought at a shop or on-line or built by oneself, etc. Regarding weight, I don't know what my bikes weigh and don't care. And do you weigh bikes stripped down or with pedals, bottles, racks, bags, computers, etc.? Weight weenies have a habit of quoting weights that don't include many parts that almost everyone rides with.

Another issue is that some of us commute on multiple bikes. I have four different bikes that I ride to work, depending on my mood, the weather and other factors.

All that aside, it would be nice if commuters would include more information about their bikes, the components, and their route when posting pictures.
Do you guys really put that much thought into your commuter bike? I understand if you were building your dream bike then yeah component selection is crucial, but for a commuter? Its gonna get banged up and abused if you ride in adverse weather and/or NYC's terrible roads. I guess maybe its because I live in a city with so much bike theft why I'd opt for the cheapest possible components without giving it a second thought. I think price would be useful to give the thread more of a catalog-ish look, in sense that someone can browse it and its "self-contained". If you commute on multiple bikes you can post all of them! Thanks for your suggestions.

@Giant Doofus, I had a trained eye before joining bikeforums, but it has improved vastly since then. It amazes me, what some of us can do. We can glance at a bike and know in an instant that, for example, the decals are forgeries or that a single component is not original to the bike.

You're just saying that because your bike isn't a black carbon race bike with black decals and really deep carbon rims.

Yes. It's a passion. I tinker with every bike that I own, even though they are all modest bikes. My commuter is old and crummy looking, but I keep it in tip-top mechanical condition.

I started the thread on Sunday, here's the link! You're free to post your bike in that thread, but do us all a favor and flip the bike around so we can admire the chain line! SS/FGs are are about the chain line!
