iPhone bike apps and mounts (thoughts and suggestions)

I am planning on doing a comprehensive review of bike apps and mounts for the iPhone so people can actually see how they compare to each other. I thought I would come here first to see if anyone had any requests on bike apps they would like to know about, or apps they might suggest. Along with adding your thoughts about the bike apps you use for your iPhone.

HERE is a link to my blog page Bread Bike about this. There are some photos and videos to go along with it.

Cyclemeter here. Tried a few others but hands down I liked Cyclemeter best.

I have my iPhone 4 in a otter box case and have a homemade aluminum bracket mounted to the stem that the belt clip case attaches to. Very secure and the mounting bracket is made to act as a spring to take out vibration. I also run with a handlebar bag that has one compartment that holds a battery backup system DIY that I built to recharge the phone. Cyclemeter is a great app but is also a battery drain if you run it with screen displayed and requires being able to charge phone while riding on long trips. A must if doing bicycle touring to areas where AC charging is not available.

The otter box case provides a good level of protection for a reasonable price and the belt clip is fast to remove while leaving the bike. When I'm in a moist area I slip a baggie over the phone during the ride. If it starts raining I put phone into handlebar bag to stay dry.

I have photos of the mount I used with my 3G but don’t have any of the 4 yet.

I use iMapMyRide+ ($2) and put my iPhone 4 in a runners arm band and wrap it around the neck of the handlebar. Doesn't lose GPS and doesn't rattle since the case is neoprene

If you could take photos soon and post them here, that would be nice I would like to see. I actually thought about that my self, (I am getting a Defender) I sent an email to Otterbox asking to buy a second belt clip for that reason, and if they ever thought of making a bike mount them self(all they would have to do is change the clip to a bar mount). They wouldn't sell me a Belt clip for what they called "experimentation", and didn't say anything about producing one them self, so I would guess they don't care at all to make one. I also had more problem problems with them.
Other then that I am still getting the Defender and hope its really good, and plan on doing a review.

There are a few bike cases already on the market that do what you are thinking of here is a link to two.

https://www.thinkbiologic.com/products/bike-mount-iphone-4

https://amlingscycle.com/products/tigra-iphone-bikemount

I liked the otter case and didn’t see a need for a second case with the belt clip working fairly good to attach it to my bike. Like the Biologic the belt clip lets me index the phone 90 degrees when on the bike. If someone wanted to really build a case they would make one like the Biologic with built in speakers and also a bank of batteries and or a recharge unit. I'm sure that’s in the works by someone because almost every day a new app or device surfaces bike related.

I will post the pics of my iPhone 3 setup and I do have one of the bracket for the otter box but the phone isn't in the picture. Weather permitting I will take a few tonight.

My first setup:

I now use the same bracket minus the cross bracket and bungee and clip the belt clip over the aluminum like it was a belt. I attached the bracket to a old plastic reflector handlebar clamp part. It holds it nice and allows it to absorb some shock.

Bracket as it is now for the otter box setup.

I've been pretty happy with the Wahoo Fitness Bike Mount kit. The case holds either iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 (and 4S) models with a removable rubber liner. Adds the ANT+ sensor for reading heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor.

Does it rattle or anything while riding? I typically start RunKeeper (insert your favorite app here) and throw it into the saddle bag until I'm done riding currently.

Cyclemeter is the go to app. If you already have a belt clip attachment for your phone, you could always tape the "clip" part to the frame and insert your phone into its holster.

got mine today. Spendy but works great. Solid mount, using various apps seem to pick up the sensor just fine. Now to get an HRM. Touch through the case works well too, which surprised me.

I have been riding with the Digifit system through all their generations since they first came out. https://new.digifit.com/ I like it for my use. I commute daily. this tracks miles, maps the route, speed/cadence and HR. I am using the iPhone 4. the new generation ANT device is very very frugal with power use and after an hour ride I have only used 10% of the phones battery life. I really like their new enclosed mount box. that really does work and totally protects the phone. touch screen works flawlessly. I have tried many map apps over the 4 years I've had the iPhone. I look forward to your review as something new might have come up in this area that would be worth looking into.
only issue with these ANT devices they are proprietary and don't work with other companies apps. at least so far as I have found with those I have tested.

just did a little surfing and found this: https://www.iphoneness.com/iphone-app...ps-for-iphone/

seems Garmin has an iPhone app that they have updated and fixed so it runs better. might be worth a look. there are several other apps noted.

The mount is fairly secure with a rubber inner part against the stem. There is a screw that holds the top of the mount to the bottom piece that is attached to the stem and I've had that loosen after a few hundred miles and that did cause some rattling. Just needed to tighten it up and the rattle was gone.

The case itself has a rubber liner around the iPhone to help reduce the shock/vibration the phone receives.
