It was great that you passed some riders and even showed some of those that gave up and started walking. Sorry the sun was in your eyes but nothing can be done about that. And even though it was in two parts, it doesn't look like you missed any of it.

Hopefully this will give 50+ riders in other parts of the country (and the world) some views of some of the cool climbs we have here in California.

Maybe I should get a Go-Pro myself . . .

I really wish I would have had the GoPro for the Eastern Sierra Double. Having the June Lake loop on cam would have been great.

True Dwight,

June Lake, Sage Hen, Mono Lake, Paradise, Crowley Lake, Mammoth Scenic Loop, so many amazing vistas on the Eastern Sierra Double!

I've been screwing around with cycling videos since last year. I recorded a bunch last season but discovered that I'm always tilting my head to the right, so helmet mounting didn't work. I thought I could correct it in editing (I use Sony Vegas Studio), but it's a real pain inna butt to do that.

So, this year I started using the GoPro handlebar mount, but I had to constantly adjust that because the mount kept slipping.

I started using a Ram mount on the Amishland tour a couple of weeks ago, and the mount is rock-solid but discovered that the weak point is the GoPro mounting - you can tighten that damn screw until you need to use your TEETH to loosen it, but the camera will still rotate to point downward if you hit a bump or go over some railroad tracks or something. Gotta do something about that.

I also had the mount come loose on the handlebars last Saturday, and didn't have a 3/8" wrench with me to re-tighten it, so I missed a glorious Saturday-morning ride through downtown Detroit! <grrr...>

Love the video! Yeah, I noticed you passed the guy. I rode up that "little" bit once, enough to say I did it, and don't need to do it again. Let's just say I was passed by people walking. I really enjoyed the Amgen guys sweating over it this year! Nice to see the local roads in video.

For forward facing cameras, I've have very good luck with a K-Edge Pro Handlebar Mount. Amazon link here. Kinda expensive, but rock solid. I never have to worry about the camera falling off the bike or swinging down when hitting a bump. I take a wrap once around the handlebar with an old cut-up inner tube so that it won't scratch my bars. I have it mounted so that the camera is below my bars and doesn't stick up above the bars and act as a distraction. (If you do this, make sure you flip the video in the GoPro setup menu before you start recording.) (Here is an Internet rip-off picture showing 'upside down' camera mount position. Mounting this way depends on how tight or loose you run your cables from under the tape.)

A much less expensive version, (same Amazon page, but called the "Handlebar Mount"), does not have that extension. Have not tired it.

Costco had a pretty screaming deal on GoPro cameras last year, so I picked up another. Finally got around to mounting it facing rearward using a K-Edge saddle rail mount. Only problem with that is I now have nowhere to attach my saddle bag. After a few rides with the camera facing to the rear, the videos are pretty boring. I've concluded that they really aren't very interesting. Not much fun watching a video showing you where you've been. Looking at video where you are headed is a lot more exciting and interesting. (I mounted a camera rearward for safety reasons, but will probably discontinue.)

Rear facing is better for taking videos of your riding buddies.

I chose Contour because I liked the mounting options better - but I still had to do the innertube trick on the handlebar mount.

I've seen a few on Youtube that appear to be speeded-up. Is this an editing thing? I found it very useful since I was researching a route and just wanted an overview anyway.

Oh, I don't know about that. I may get around to doing the Five Boro Bike Tour one of these years, but until then, I do the ride vicariously through YouTube videos. Found some decent ones this year from some travel company.

Watched all ten videos in the series, probably about two hours or so or about half the ride. For the most part, I didn't get bored. Maybe it's the constantly changing scenery or the wide variety of riders. And I didn't need any kind of soundtrack, just like I don't need music when I'm on the road myself.

Looks like the guy was using some kind of frame mount, though, not a handlebar mount. There was none of the side to side twitching I saw in other videos. Probably used a Windcutter, too, since I didn't hear any wind noise at all.

The GoPro's are fun, but editing 1-2 hours of videos to 5 - 15 minutes is tedious..... especially when you make a mistake and have to start over. I almost wish I had gotten the Hero3 Black, with the remote. It would be nice to take still shots as well as the videos.

I agree with the above, shorter is better, as hard as it is to condense and even cut some segments. Unlike most I prefer not to mount my GoPro, opting to hold it, sometimes on a short boom. I like the varied viewpoints and panning that this allows. Just have to be extra careful on the fast descents with only one hand on the bars. When not in use I stow the camera in my jersey pocket. I have quite a number video segments of my pocket.

How about battery life. My Drift Ghost won't last three hours.
