Dahon Boardwalk S1 too slow?
Hello all.
I am in the market for my first folder. I plan on using it to commute at least a couple days a week to get in shape and save a little gas. My commute is 16 miles round trip.
I am not looking to spend a ton of money on my first folder. My budget is in the $300 range, but I can budge a bit if it is worth it.
After some researching, I noticed many of you on the forums recommend a Dahon Boardwalk S1 for this price range, but many also say that it is pretty slow. I'd like to be able to ride at a decent pace. I am also not the most experienced rider.
My area is not very hilly at all, so would a single-speed suffice? I'm not in perfect shape, this is part of the reason I want to commute in the first place.
I'm not looking to upgrade a lot on the bike, as I really wouldn't have a clue what to do.
Here are my stats:
180lbs
5'10"
So for a 16mi round trip commute, would I be better off going for something else? Any suggestions?

Given the length of your commute; I would definately go with a bike with gears - even slight hills can be challenging with a single speed bike. Take a look at the Gotham 2 at Citizenbikes.com - in your price range and might be a good fit for you. I just purchased the Tokyo from them and am quite pleased.

If you are in the USA, consider the Dahon Eco C6 (https://www.thorusa.com/dahon/current/ecoc6.htm) and the Dahon Speed Uno (https://www.thorusa.com/dahon/current/speeduno.htm).

First, where are you located? (Some bikes are not available in some countries.)

Located in the USA. Thank you for your suggestions!
I also really like the Gotham2 geeeyejo suggested. I was actually looking at that a few nights ago.

You may also try the Downtube Nova 7speed. it has gotten good reviews here (I don't own this model). $299 plus shipping.

I have the Citizen Gotham 1 and it's only a slow single speed, but it can get around pretty well. My area is also very flat with a few slight hills. I can get up them just fine at a good pace, just takes a little more time than my Bianchi does getting up the same...it's effortless pedaling the whole way.
I have put 20+ miles on mine for a few days already and it's been fine.
I say go for it in my opinion glad I bought a single speed. You won't reach excessive speeds, but they are quite comfortable pedaling and will easily get you there.
